So I had a topend knock on my blast that I traced to this. What would make a cam look like this? I have no idea, except for crummy lifters maybe?

Yikes! The only thing I can think of is the tappet’s roller bearings being seized and not allowing the rolly part to in fact roll. Good for you for having found the problem now and not somewhere down the road... literally! |

I agree with Seth--looks like there was no rolling going on,just rubbing. What does the lifter look like? |

I'll pull the lifters out this weekend. I ran my finger and the rolly part was rolling. This is actually my 'somewhere down the road.' I had a top end knock, and rode the bike for almost 150 more miles with my cam going like this.....hahah. I didn't think it was quite this serious. My next project is to pull of the oil pump and try and flush the oil system as much as I can to get those little shavings out. I'll post pictures of the lifters somewhere down the line. |

I guess the metal inside is much softer than the surface. case hardened? Can you just grab sporster cams and throw two in there? |

Should I be worried about bearings in the engine after all this crud has run through? I'm going to flush all the oil out and replace the oil pump, but I really don't know. |

The oil pump if its like the older ones is easy to remove, disassemble and inspect for damage. it has 2 sides and the "return" side likely has the most damage, if the "feed" side is undamaged then no sweat! IMO unless you SAW shavings in the case the particles are likely smaller. I agree with you about flushing the tank, maybe just replace the hoses. rather than risk possibly missing any debris. when you look if both sides of the pump innards are chewed up then consider further inspection, with this oiling setup if its like the older "tubers", the oil leaves the pump and goes to the filter then through the engine so I would look at the cam case, crank bearing if there was no appearent damage then I would not worry. IIRC Repicheep had a similar issue on his M2 thanks for taking the time to post this. |

my guess is that the bearings in the lifter are infact out of the lifter, seen it many times mostly with evo big twins as the angle of the dangle is so great.... but thats my guess... |
