BATON ROUGE, La. -- An experimental toxin sprayed on mosquitoes in several U.S. counties has turned the pests into insect Einsteins! The insecticide, which was rushed through development in an effort to curtail mosquito outbreaks in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, not only failed in eliminating the bugs, but also increased their brainpower to a level that some believe is superior to that of human beings. Dr. Thomas Jarrad, head of the Institute for Entomological Sciences, was one of the first to study the brilliant bugs. "Apparently, the insecticide stimulated a growth hormone in the mosquitoes that is creating new and more complex brain cells than previously thought possible in the insect world," says Dr. Jarrad. "Simply put, these mosquitoes are capable of advanced intellectual reasoning." And these super-smart creatures seem to be using this newfound intelligence to seek revenge against humans for years of decimation through sprays, bug zappers and old-fashioned fly swatters. The reports of swarms of these Mensa-level mosquitoes attacking humans in deliberate and complex formations are causing panic in several towns throughout Louisiana and Alabama, where the experimental insecticide was first tested. Nine people in the town of Winnsboro, Louisiana were recently rushed to the hospital after being swarmed by thousands of the creatures, who planned their attack like a military battle. "One group of bugs chased us down a dead-end side street, where an even bigger swarm was waiting for us," says one victim, who is currently recovering from more than 300 bites to his face and arms. In other instances, the bugs have sabotaged military equipment by crawling inside and chewing through wires, and even started fires by spilling flammable fluids and igniting sparks. Dr. Jarrad fears that frightening scenarios like these could soon spread throughout the country. "If these smart bugs are successful in creating equally intelligent offspring, then I'm afraid that we may be facing an apocalyptic battle to retain our position at the top of the food chain," he warns. "And they will have hundreds of millions of soldiers on their side." |
