Last Sunday morning, I pulled into the gas station / store on the south side of Tucson where a lot of motorcyclists gather before and after rides. I was on my 03 XB9S. There were lots of bikes there and quite a few HD cruisers - maybe 15. I noticed something. If you want to be "different" and ride an HD cruiser, all you have to do is leave your bike stock, wear a helmet, and don't wear any HD gear. Tim |

Also, if you want to really stand out, you have to behave differently. Instead of stopping and talking for an hour every 30 miles, keep riding until you need gas. |

You should have seen the strange looks I got when I rode my Sporty decked out in a black full face helmet & a black/blue Joe Rocket revolution jacket. I had the Harley guys & the sportbike guys both confused. |

I do get comments myself about wearing full leathers, full face helmet, sport riding boots, reflective vest, & stock pipes. Mostly just confusion on their part - I guess I am not a real BIKER if I do not ride or look like the rest. Classic Quote " Riding a HOG makes me feel like an individual" thats why they all dress the same and try to look alike and build their bikes the same way..........to each their own. At least they're riding ( it may be from buffet to buffet, but they're riding) |

Hi, You could also try riding your Harley through corners at any pace faster than the average blue hair on a lawn tractor. I'm generalizing here but "most" Harley riders I see really can't ride around corners. I'm sure that there are skilled Harley riders out there but lately they seem few and far between. It has been said they make up for this by getting the loudest pipes they can and going as fast as they can in a straight line. :-) I came to this conclusion last Sunday after being passed by a group of Harley riders on a long straight, (I, foolishly, was doing the speed limit, go figure) coming through the nice right hand sweeper at the end of the straight, at about 50 or so, just as I was beginning to roll on the throttle for a nice exit, there, in front of me was one of the group that just passed me, doing about 20MPH in the 50MPH zone. Well, hit the brakes, the XB did it's thing, that wonderful Dunlop in the rear did it's best to slide all around but I managed to keep it on the tires. The squid on the Softtail most likely muttered something under his breath about the "jerk riding a rice rocket" and went haplessly along his way, in a straight line... Tom |

Yeah. I've seen guys who could ride those choppers HARD. But most now-a-days seem to set up what we call here a "rolling roadblock". They get a bunch of them together and ride thru the mountain roads at 40-45 MPH, even stacking up SUVs behind them. You can't get around them safely and they won't pull over to let the "train" behind them pass. I know this is a generalization but I've seen it MANY times. You know you're unlucky when you pull over to stop for 10-15 minutes, hoping the "rolling roadblock" is now way down the road. You start your bike and find out that they have also stopped just a few miles down the road for about the same time and now you're behind them again. Tim |

What is this a trick question? You wanna be different, get a different bike. Don't be some doo rag wearing harley cruiser poser. |

A friend of mine who is a custom bike builder said he has stopped wearing any black leather due to not wanting to be confused with the Yuppie Harley crowd. |

I'm starting to feel a little guilty here, piling on the HD cruiser crowd, but WTF... The usual (and very individualistic) costume here seems to be: - doo rag - sun glasses or goggles - black T-shirt (some sort of HD dealer/function) - fingerless gloves - ragged jeans - HD belt - assless chaps - boots (the one smart thing!) In the winter to keep warm I've seen them wear a stocking cap, goggles, scarf - anything to keep from wearing a full-face helemt, which would keep them both warm and safer. Tim I guess the one good thing (as stated above by someone) is that they ARE riding - I just wish they weren't! |

I'm not bagging on another rider, but jesus. you get a bunch of guys on harleys who think they are Dennis Hopper{not Peter fonda, he was a fag} riding a bunch of harleys who think they are rebels. Most of them have never riden a bike before they were 30 and thinking they are different. they ride in packs, not staggered were you can pass, all wearing black leather and whatever. I feel like like more of a rebel blasting by them on my un baffled honda maxim 550 with the motor turning 9 grand in my t shirt and full face. I am building a rigid chopper by the way, a honda 750 bobber board tracker, to be different. i still have and ride my buell too! I do have a leather jacket , but it is vanson grey buell one. |

Can't say a lot about Buell riders because they are not that many of them. On a 7,500 mile trip last summer I did not see a single Buell. The local HD dealership is also a Buell dealer but I have never seen another Buell rider at the dealership. All the sport bike riders in town have rice burners, they claim twice the performance at half the cost. I bought a Buell BECAUSE the HD/Buell association not in spite of it. The S3T is fun, but when I go on a long trip I always take my Road King. |

I'm sure that there are skilled Harley riders out there Oh yes. I remember Jose telling me about someone doing Battletrax on a Dresser. And I've seen pictures here of someone who ran Deals Gap on their V-ROD and scratched up the sides of their radiator in the turns. |

Captain America absolutely made the movie. He shows that you can be cool and live the lifestyle without being a peckerhead. Notice while Billy was always ranting, flying off the handle or whining about something, Captain America was laid back and handled the situation as cool as a cucumber. You are however intitled to your opinion even if it is wrong. P.S. "We're eating their food man". LOL |

Labels? Why is our society so hung up on them? A Biker, a motorcyclist, or a rider does it really matter? You're on 2 wheels with the sun on your face and the wind in your hair, what more can we ask for? I'll soon have a HD and a Buell in the garage and usually ride alone. I'm just out to ride, explore, and enjoy myself and don't really give much thought to what other people think or say. |

ever ridden like that. Usually I just get to and from work with a 4-5 hr. juant on the weekends where I try to use my whole tire. The other night I left with a pair of clear glasses and a longsleeve t-shirt, just putting along at 1 in the morning, was probably the first time I have done that in a while and while I am sure the sportbikers would make fun and others are shaking their heads at this noisey, shaking, bright green thing. getting pigeonholed aint bad as long as you like where your pigeonholed, and usually allows people to be lazy. |

On my S2 I get the Hand out sign from the squids, which confuses me for a half sec. Then a full dresser pulls up and I'm invisible, which is fine with me. |

Labels? Why is our society so hung up on them? Show me someone who doesn't use labels and I'll show you a saint. I'll bet even Jesus, Mohammed, and Buddha used labels. Everyone does. BTW, If I get so old and up that I have to have a train of SUV traffic behind me on a mountain road (no matter what kind of bike I'm riding) then it's time to STOP riding - even a Road Queen should be able to handle the curves as well as an SUV. Who cares what someone wears or what they ride or even how they ride? I don't care too much what someone rides - as long as they just ride the damn thing. What they wear is just funny - nothing more. But how they ride!!! If they ride like @ssholes, thinking the hiway is there for them to cruise in a un-passable group at 40 MPH - well - then they deserve a line or two or derision - and maybe a label or two. Tim |

Reminds me of the time I left Coulterville on 49 north. The group of rice sports I caught would leave me on the straights and I would be dogging them on the turns on a Roadking...... |

Twice in the past ten years I have had trips spoiled by "sport riders" who think they are on a race track and end up in the ER. Last summer while crossing New Mexico one guy in our group wanted to take curves at 120 instead of 50 and almost killed himself. He did kill our trip and his bike. There is something to be said for common sense. |

Some of my best friends are doo rag wearing Dennis Hopper wanna be's. I laugh at them too!But they get over when someone wants to pass and don't pack up. What Nevar said ! As far as Easy Rider goes, Jack Nicholson made the movie, the rest was just cheesy and over the top. My post above should have said Yamaha Maxim, not Honda maxim. i get confused with 4 different cycles to ride. I had a ride recently spoiled by a group of people I was riding with. A friend on a rigid Ultra and his brother on a 750GSXR where clocked doing 120 mph in a 65. it took an hour for the HiPO to finally just give them a ticket. The doo rag wearing Ultra rider was leading. |

Group riding sort of terrifies me. I enjoy my solitary rides the most. If I'm going to follow somebody I tell them that it will be a loose follow and not to worry about me unless they don't see me in their mirror for a half an hour or more. Jack |

I ride WITH a small group of 3-6 bikes with people I know. I avoid riding IN a group (there is a difference). Absolutely no interest in riding with large groups of riders (like the local HOG). Most of my riding group are retired, and ride together 25,000 miles a year or more and have for the last 11 years. Last summer we had a son-in-law tag along and he is the guy that wrecked his rocket ship. |

There is something to be said for common sense. I second this. Sport Bikers in large groups (Biker Boyz?) are another kind of danger - to themselves and everyone else. I rode with a *crazy* group ONCE! I knew I was either going to crash trying to keep up or be the one guy that gets arrested because I was in the rear most of the time. They need to go to track days and keep crazy racing off the street. Tim |

A word about the movie Easy Rider. When I was a kid I thought this was a great movie but when I *try* to watch it now it embarrases me. Most reviews still give it 4 stars - I'd give it 1 and 1/2 stars at the most. If you want to see Peter Fonda in a great flick - see 'Uly's Gold'. Tim |

This thread IS FUNNY. I have been riding for only about a year and I ride a Buell but my girlfriend I ride with mostly rides a Sporty and we usually ride with these cruiser dudes you guys a bashing here. Now here is the funny part ON THIS site there are photos of you "cool Buell" guys like this one http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/6817/147214.jpg And this one looks like a bunch of 8th graders hiding in the corner at a school dance because they are afraid the teacher is going to tell them "go ask a girl to dance" (oh and notice how different they look from each other) http://www.rhinowerx.com/fotos/data/media/97/IMG_1236.jpg AND here is a photo showing how INDIVIDUAL you guys look - http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/6817/145975.jpg NOW THAT IS FUNNY ! ! ! LOL, Think about it guys. (Message edited by bustybuell on September 22, 2005) |

Wow, some folks seem to have issues. If so, those are things you need to work through yourself and maybe posting to a thread like this is some sort of therapy for you. I hope it works. On another note how often do you get behind these 'packs' of slow, inconsiderate HD riders? If on a multilane road, just wait until its clear and go around, and forget them. If on 2 lane roads, jump off at the first intersection and explore some different roads. Too many roads and not enough time, well for me anyway. Oh and negative comments are a waste of bandwidth. I read that in 1993 (I believe) HD bought 49% of Buell and another 49% around 1998, so the profits from Buell and those Road Queens funnel back to the same pockets. Different rides for different riders makes the world more interesting :-) |
