I know this will sounded dumb for most of you. But I have to ask. I see "harleys" with no mufflers, running just straight pipes (for the sound). Why cant I do that with my Buell? I want the loud harley sound. I live in CA, home of the emissions so "drumming" it out is NOT an option. Need to have stock for court "fix-it tickets". So without buying a D&D exhaust, if putting just straight pipes is not an option, what else is there for me? Thanks all and ride safe -Steven |

ok, here's the deal.... go to ebay, and buy a used stock take off... (pay attention here, this is where it gets tricky) send the take off to be drummed, and save your stock exhaust for the fix it tickets.... presto, everyone is happy |

do not run an open header on a buell. no back pressure = less power and also a chance to bend/break a valve. I had to on my blast for 2 days because my stocker cracked. I have a V&H now and when I get in the upper revs it starts to sound like what a harley should sound like. Get a Jardine or V&H if you don't want D&D. |

"do not run an open header on a buell. no back pressure = less power and also a chance to bend/break a valve." Meh... close. You end up with less overall power, but you can tune the length to play with exactly where you DO get power. If you only need a narrow range then a straightish pipe isn't too bad. I have no idea if there's an increased risk of a bent valve... I'm thinking not, but what do I know ? |

If all you do is spend your time at WOT then you can just run an open pipe. Buy the drummer without the badge since the CANISTER is still marked with the Emissions code. Otherwise pay attention to what Phat_J said about ebay...Otherwise everyone else is right but its not about back pressure, but wave volume according to the other nights "Corbin Ride On" |

Or chat/e-mail Al at American Sport Bike. Or post to him in our sponsor section. His shop is in Vista, Ca and he'll ship to you. There are a number of pipes out there for XBs now. If it ever gets so I can spend money on my XB instead of the S3 I'm thinking the Latus pipe. |

"..running just straight pipes (for the sound). Why cant I do that with my Buell?" H-D twins started with two fairly short/not highly convoluted headers ending in two mufflers. It created the "potato-potato" idle and the characteristic sound for the line. Two straight pipes made it louder. It changed very little over time as long as there were two separate exhaust tracts. To get that same sound from a Buell with more convoluted headers and a single muffler (or straight pipe) is simply not going to work. If you gave a Buell two straight pipes running through the existing path and ending in about the same area (outlets to each side at the front of the rear tire?) you might have a similar sound. But then you would have all the issues with jetting (carb) and ECM tweaking (EFI) to develop the same or more power and keep the engine healthy. Is there a Buell system that has done that yet? I don't know (I'm a new Bueller) and am not interested in changing anything about my M2's stock system or sound. Jack |

I don't think these are available anymore, and don't recall the issues people had with them: http://www.cas4.com/Buell/Exhaust/BUB/Buell%20Exhaust%20by%20BUB.htm |

I've seen those on an X1 a couple years ago - nice pipes. Too bad the guy crashed his a couple times that week...scratched up the pipes... |

"Too bad the guy crashed his a couple times that week..." That must have been a bad week for the guy. |

It was the Carving the NorthEast tour. Dumped it Sunday in Ohio (well, couldn't make the corner so he rode it out through the hay). Brought the bike back out on the road, bent the right handlebar back up, not too much damage. Dumped it again in VT on Thursday - that one had to be pulled out of the ditch...bent the right handlebar back up again. That's the one that scraped up his nice flake paint job and rashed up the Bub pipes. Needless to say his nickname became Krash (it had to start with a K since his license plate was "Kuell" (Message edited by cruisin on September 14, 2005) |

So Cruisin, you actually heard that exhaust system on the bike? Did it have the potato-potato sound? Did it sound like a Harley? Jack |
