Hey everyone, just got back the other day from a long strange summer of fishing, First off, my wife and I had our first child up there. Healthy, screaming baby boy. Really great start to the season. Things went from bad to worse after that. My brother-in-law and I were working 4 nets in two different boats. I was picking"fish" and he was pressure washing the net. He somehow tripped or something and go a face full of wide open rotating nosel pressure washer. It cut through his cheek in giant circular swathes and burned through his chin before taking his eye out. "Really gruesome stuff" Anyway we ended up calling the coast guard and having him airlifted out of there. He's had several surgeries and they are hopeful that he'll be able to have some vision out of the eye within another 6 months and one more surgery. That left me to fish the rest of the summer alone. Not much fun. Finally back, cleaning the bikes up a bit and hopefully will get some riding in this week. It's really great to be back. Hope you all had a great summer. | ||

Jason, congrats on the birth of your son... this changes everything. hope yer brother recovers some, advice: DO NOT OPERATE PRESSURE WASHER WITHOUT EYE PROTECTION. (why was he washing a net? jellyfish? sounds ill-advised to me) regards, dean | ||

No worries guys, We fish on the South end of Kodiak Island"Alitak bay" We mostly fish for Reds but catch all other species, lots of pinks, some dogs and silvers and once in awhile a king. | ||

have to ask again: why was the net being "pressure washed". have done a bit of salmon fishing, and this was not part of our regime. | ||

We Set Net fish, Our nets get load with literally tons of kelp in them on Minus tides. Also in the last few years I've noticed a lot more Jelly fish. Before they started using pressure washers " which they've only been using since the late eighties" they used to try and shake and pick it out of the nets. Using the washers really saves on time and gear. Anchor and sway lines break when the net is loaded up with weeds.Also the lead lines tend to tear off with that much kelp. Really strange though how they load up. Some times you can go a week straight with clean nets and then all of the sudden you are washing 2 times a day. Anyway hope that answers your question. | ||

so when you deploy to kodiak, do you use the ferry out of bellingham, or do you fly up through anchorage? reason i am curious is that i live year round just a bit north of kodiak. latitude 59 N, longitude 151 W, Homer, Alaska If you end up killing some time give a shout, i am in the book. later, dean | ||

Dang, wish I had know that. I drove up this year for the first time"normally take a boat out of Astoria" Spent two nights in Homer. ON the way out and back. Hopped the tustemeana to kodiak. Love the little Sour Dough cafe just off the spit. | ||

been raining steady for 4 days, last motocross of the season tomorrow in kenai, should be a MUD bogger. I race 125 novice, and vet class. my 14 year old son races 125 novice also, should be a whole bunch of fun in the mud. | ||

Wow sounds fun. Must be fun to ride in the class with your son. Jay is new to Homer, he has a set net site on Kodiak but also works on the Ferry there. I also know Steve Brown and his wife Nina. |
