I rode the S1 to work to get some dyno time on the weekend. It dropped a cylinder before I even made one run. I went through everything and think it may be the module. I've got a Crane wired for single fire. Using a spark tester the front cylinder will fire once when it is first cranked and that's it. I'm depressed. I get cranky with no bike. |

i'm confused....sounds like it didn't "drop a cylinder", then, right? funny- mine runs great with the factory ignition.... |

I have been using the race ignition for my S1 for 4 years now. No problems. |

I know what you mean; I don't much like fighting electrical gremlins either Rick. |

Doesn't it use the same pick-up for both cylinders? Maybe there is a ground wire loose somewhere. |

I was using the Buell race module before I put this thing on it...and had used it for about 4 years as well. It's going back in temporarily to see if it truly is the new module. I basically checked all wiring and components from the module connector out. Usually with this kind of failure it's the coil or wires and both tested good and I still had the same problem using a new coil and wires. The ignition sensor triggers both cylinders and the module interprets which is which. That thing is original and a lot of the potting has ran out of it but it still works. All wiring was checked for continuity and for shorts to ground. Anyway, I'm just bummed my bike is down.

I am totally, completely ecstatic for ya. (Message edited by Rick_a on August 30, 2005) |

I'd say the easy fix is to see if the race ignition works fine. If it does then you have found the problem. |

Yeah...I know it. My harness has been modified for the single fire ignition so I've gotta do some messing around so I can adapt the dual fire stuff without unraveling the entire harness and cutting and re-soldering things again. |

If you had been following Ricks Progress, you would notice that not only is it not stock, but has numerous alterations And as per the dyno test conducted, single fire ignition produces more power, no idea why but it does And if your interested Tramp, its listed under the dyno sheets on this web site R |

Of all the things I've done the fancy single fire ignition was something I could've done without. In fact I feel it was a waste of money. I'm going to regress back to the old school. My Pro Series module may last a lifetime but I've already modified my harness for single fire so I'm doing away with it altogether. I'm going to get a mechanical advance electronically triggered Dyna S dual fire and a stand alone rev limiter. It's a little more maintenance but shouldn't leave me stranded without warning. The advance mechanism is a bit of a PITA to tune but once there it's there. I won't have the dual range of ignition curves, but as long as it works good at WOT I'll be happy with it. My ignition system will basically go from 9 wires to 3. My Pro Series Dual fire was a bit of a compromise because I had to retard the timing plate enough that it reduced the initial timing enough to make it hard starting. I never had a chance to compare and see which was capable of more power, but as far as driveability the only difference I saw was that it'd never cough when cold at parking lot RPM's with the single fire system. Nothing dramatic. |

I finally got around to taking a look at the bike again (I've been so pissed at it I haven't bothered). It was the module. I put the dual fire coil back on it. The Crane module wouldn't run at all on dual fire...it would fire a few times then quit...same as the front cylinder on single fire. If I turned the ignition off then back on it would do the same. Plugged the old module back in and wow, it runs. |

Somewhat, anyway. I'm still stuck with this blown module to send back, and an expensive hi-po coil I don't need anymore. At least I can ride...the highlight of my every day. |

Dyna 2Ki is tits. single fire will not make more horsepower, but runs a little smoother at low rpms. |

But mechanical advance is sooo cool! |

I finally got to hit the Dyno again. I had it up to 91 hp, 81 ft-lbs tq using old school on the road methods, and gained another couple hp and 1 ft-lb on the dyno. I know there's more in it. I think I can wring another 5 hp out of her. Currently I have enough discs on the 'Trapp that it's almost hitting the wheel, so I've made a big opening endcap for it with a deflector so the exhaust doesn't roast the tire. I've also got a big S&S velocity stack I'm making an adapter for. The mechanical advance mechanism has to be heavily modified. Even with heavy springs it advances a little too quickly, and the initial advance is so rediculously low that it requires "special" starting procedures. This stuff is fun. A lot of the techs have been really skeptical of my whole project. They can't believe I gained 10hp since my last run. I'm just getting started. I've got a couple thousand hard miles on her now with no problems. |
