I was noticing the other day a large amount of oil on the underside of the tranny. SO I took a closer look and noticed a small pool of oil directly behind the engine on the top of the tranny. I cleaned it up and am now looking to see if there is more oil there every time I ride. I wend riding last night and I noticed that there is more oil there. Is this coming from the bottom end? And can I have the dealer fix this under the warranty? I want to keep this bike as long as possible, but I have been coming up short with the maintenance costs to get the 10,000 mile service. I have enough saved up now and I intend to have it done. Will this fix my problem? It seems to me that it is coming from the bottom end somewhere, maybe a messed up gasket? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I will try to get pics tonight. |

My M2 did that from the day it left the factory. I believed it was rocker boxes, until I replaced them and it kept coming back. So I figured it was the starter gasket, until I replaced that and it kept coming back. Only other thing I could figure was that it was the base gasket on the rear jug, so I did the natural thing and traded the M2 in on a new 9sx. Seriously, mine did it for like 25k miles. I would have to wipe up the pool with a paper towel about once every 15k miles. It was never a problem. |

Mine has done it since new. I have done everything Bill mentioned including splitting the cases back when it was under warranty to see if they could stop that leak. Never did. I don't pay attention to it anymore, I just clean it as needed. It's transmission fluid that leaks, not motor oil. My guess is that it comes out of the top seam of the crankcase due to porosity in the metal. I have changed the stator wire plug, the starter gasket, everything I could think of, and it still leaks, 50k later |

mine also pools there, every time i open the tranny i forget to silicone the damb stator plug! that's a likely place for it to be leaking. i have (and still do) wiped it clean just like reep & jose. one of these days i'll get back in the tranny (probably soon) and seal that plug (you have to do it from the inside out).i doubt they'll do it for you during your scheduled maintenance. |

I had the same problem. On my 00 M2 it was leaking around the rubber grommet that feeds the stator wire through the primary housing. (located between the starter and the base of the rear cylinder). I put up with it for a few years and then finally used some silicone RTV between the grommet and the aluminum. (when I had the primary opened up). It helped for a while but I think some lube is leaking between the wires and the grommet. Doesn't seem like a big worry since it's a very slow "leak" and the stuff doesn't get to the point of smoking or burning... on my bike at least. |

Same issue on my X1, it doesn't seem to be using much any oil, so I attributed it to the starter gasket. Same as Bill (used to do) and Jose (does), I just clean it up every now and again. Bill's idea to trade up is intriguing....except the wife would shoot me It looks like I may have a rear cylinder head leak now, so maybe it was that all along. its a 2001 X1 with around 25K on it. |

Found an internet article on Harley testing of stators: Stator Testing. One of the things they tested was "wire wicking" - primary oil moving up the stator wires by capillary action. If they had to fix it - it must have been a problem? |

My 99 X1 collects oil there too! (15,000 Mi) One place I check also is My Shifter Mount Bolts. My Banke Shifter uses the Chin Fairing Bolts as Mounts and can Looosen over Time. I Tighten these periodically and this Cleans Up any LOWER Case Leakage. The Problem is there are No Published Torque Specs for these Looong Bolts and I am Afraid of OverTightening. Any Info Out there? |
