I've tried searching for instructions on how to do this, but they've all been irrelevant. My XB is only 3 months old, and it's in need of a new tire. I'm unsure of the proper way to remove the belt, as the Tensioner pulley does not "swing" it appears to be static in one position (TIGHT!) I was curious if someone would be so kind as to help a Newb out by supplying me with some instructions on how to get the belt off and back on. The Rest I can handle. Thanks for ANY help, it's greatly appreciated. |

1) Buy the service manual. 2) Follow the service manual. (really, it's the best money you will spend, really). This is all from memory, I am at work and the manual is at home. I would not trust it if I were you, but here it is. First loosen the pinch bolts around the axle. You can then use the double nut "tool" that came with the bike to loosen the rear axle (like 15 turns I think). I don't remember if the front or the back is reverse threads, I think the front. If I'm wrong, you will know because you will break the axle and ruin your swingarm. Did I mention you should get the service manual? The axle is tapered, so as it backs out, a little tension is removed from the belt. I am not sure from there if you remove the two bolts holding on the idler pulley, or just remove the axle. Check the manual. I do know that the belt must NEVER be bent backwards, never kinked, never twisted, and never bent around a curve smaller then your back sprocket (to keep a safe margin). Many many expensive belts have broken 100 miles after a tire change because of mishandling. Did I mention get the manual? Put it together the opposite of how you got it apart, anti-sieze is recommended for the axle, several people here have broken axles trying to remove them. Torque it and the pinch bolts (that I think are there) to the values in the manual. (sorry for being a smartass to make a point... I am actually trying to help, I have only done it once on the XB and really don't remember). |

Thanks Reepicheep, trust me the service manual is on it's way, but Bikeweek is next week, and I really need this tire replaced! I'll try that and see if it works, if not, I'll be going to the HD and talking with the service dept about getting a manual ASAP. BTW, I didn't take offense to the buy service manual remarks lol I have on for my Truck, my dirtbike, and a bunch from my older cars, just haven't had the time to go get one for the m0t0. But again, thanks for your help, we'll see if it works. |

If it doesn't go easy, let me know, and I can post details from home tonight when I can get to the manual. |

rear axle is left loosey standard rotaion, you do not need to deal with the belt tensionr to change your tire. turn axle CCW, remove brake caliper, wheel falls out. |
