update: did some stress testing on the chain drive system over the weekend. ran 1260 miles, mostly in rain. 1000 of the miles were accomplished during 23-1/2 hours, also had 30 miles of snow covered roads, and a few other fun diversions. adjusted the chain tension along the way, takes one 9/16 ths wrench, only. sprayed some aerosol chain lube on several times along the way, not a big deal, had to stop for fuel anyway. |

Chain drive update: 15,608 miles everything is good. have been using a Honda branded aerosal lubricant, supposedly contains moly. the stuff is INVISIBLE, spray it on and it just disappears. no mess, does not attract or hold dust, does not goober up the rear wheel. does it work??? i dont know. small can fits in tank bag, i give it a squirt once in a while, usually at a fuel stop. so far so good. dean. |

What kind of lube are you using? It looks pretty darn clean. |

the sportster, and the dirt bikes get an alternating dosage of WD-40 and 80W-90 gear lube. The Buell chain is regularly lubed with a Honda branded aerosal, in a very convenient 5 ounce (red) can. stuff supposedly contains moly disulfide, and strangely, goes on, in any quantity, and becomes quite invisible. you can literally not tell if you just sparayed it on. it is like the stuff just disappears. very strange, but seems to work ok. if i am far from home, or just rode through a torrential down pour, i will put any variety of lubricant on, including motor oil. |

Maybe I am just stupid but I have never seen a sprocket that didn't have splines or slots for them machined into them? What kind of sprocket is that and where would one purchase one to put in place of the stock one. Did you have to drill out the sprocket to accept a 6303 bearing. Just asking cause I am doing this in the next couple of days due to a belt that now has a hole punced in it that I noticed while washing my bike last night. Did you try to machine detents into the idler bracket for adjustments that would slip over the bolt? |

20,350 miles now. still on original Tsubaki O-ring chain. has not required adjustment yet this summer. many sources for that front sprocket, including Harley store. same sprocket was used on the 883 sportster five speed in 1991 or 92 ( before they went downgraded to belt final drive. the idler sprocket was machined to fit 6303 bearing. |

Fullpower, Interesting to say the least, Anyway of gearing up to lower the revs. for the highway , say instead of the 12 revving at 3000 rpms, at 60 mph, to have it lowered to say around 2400-2500 rpms. to gain abit of top end and lower the revs. for the highway ? |

That's one of the beauties of converting to chain drive, selecting the final drive ratio that best suits your needs. |

My earlier description of my idler sprocket had the wrong part number. It is a 20 tooth steel sprocket, Grainger part number 6L962, and has been bored out to fit a 6303 bearing, which has the same ID (17mm), and fits the stock belt idler arm and spacers. |

DEAN, WHY DID YOU SWITCH FROM THE SMOOTH PLASTIC TENSIONER TO THE TEETHED GEAR? WAS IT A RELIABILITY ISSUE OR SOMETHING ELSE? WHAT'S THE NOISE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE BELT AND CHAIN AND THE TWO IDLERS?THANKS |

I think it was a matter of durability of the parts. |

Just finished my chain conversion o my '03 9R, it seems to work great, haven't put it through the paces yet. That will come this weekend. The only difference is I slotted the bottom hole and inserted an adjuster bolt. Seems to work good, hopefully it will last with the little metal that is left. A little late, but better late than never!! |
