By request: More on the bars and bar-end mirrors shown above in my May 15, 2001 post. The Napolean Bar End Mirrors on my '97 M2 are adjustable so that they can be positioned (on the fly too) above or below the bars. I think American Sport Bike carry them. They are a helluva deal at only $30 a piece compared to some others I've seen. More pics of the bars/mirrors can be found here in the Ergonomics subtopic of the knowledge vault. I've found that the Telefix III clip-ons (also shown in the above mentioned pics) are available via Spec-II Research and Engineering, web site is http://www.specii.com. The receipt from 07/11/00 shows price including shipping as $166.73. I recommend calling American Sport Bike or Sport Twin to see if they can get them first. We gotta support those guys! Mikej, I have a Givi A-600 screen on my M-2. I had it color matched, but it comes in a light tint. You could put one on for your trip. It would give you a place for stickers and much better wind protection. Which would mean less fatigue at the end of a long day in the saddle. I looked into adding a clear section to the top of my stock screen but couldn't figure out how to do it without drilling or otherwise damaging it. Thanks Kim, Givi doesn't seem to want to allow me to look at their site though. I'll make a note of it and keep my eyes open locally. I just finished whacking and carving down an old face shield from my helmet to put on front of the flyscreen, sort of a sticker-sandwich. Plus I can take it off when not needed. Gonna do a test ride with it tonight to see if it buzzes or anything. Might look funky, but if it works then it will be fine for the next month or so. | ||

All I discovered another motorcycling need this weekend (there's a surprise). I've been using tank bags for a long time, and love them to death . . . .this weekend, though, the tank bag was serious overkill . . . all I needed was something to have the map in, and maybe an extra pair of gloves . . . .actually, I think the Chase Harper Stealth bag in the Aerostich catalog would be ideal except it doesn't have a map pocket . . .. . . . any assistance is most appreciated | ||

Get one of those arm-patch map-holder things. Velcros around your forearm, forget the tank bag if you don't need it. Just another idea. | ||

Bomber, Aerostich has a couple of different types available. One uses velcro straps, the other one attaches to velcro strips sewn/glues to your sleeve. ???? Are the S3T saddlebag latches at all adjustable? My covers sure do rattle around a lot when the bike is idling and don't seem to seal tight. Yesterday there was water puddled inside after a brief rain. I'm worried about the latches getting beat to death by the shaking. | ||

Yes, the saddlebag latches are adjustable. You need a "security" type of allen with a hole in the center in order to loosen the screws. Then the latches can be moved around some to create a tighter fit. I've been successful in trying to minimize the lid's rattle so it can be done. However I didn't try to make the fit waterproof even though there's a rubber gasket in there. I don't think it's gonna happen (with the sloppy fit of my lids that is). Sparky 96S1, 98S3 | ||

I have found it necessary to let my passenger/wife know before I pull up the front wheel. Does anyone have experience with or any recommendation for a rider/passenger intercom??? Those collets look pretty nice... and perfect for a light user on a budget... any first hand experience with them? In particular, for $40 they have what looks like a well designed helmet mounting speaker and mic with noise cancelling built in. Can't tell if it has the VOX built in or not, probably not. They sell it as plugging into a cell phone, but it would likely plug into a VOX adapter for a FRS radio as well. As I already have a couple sets of decent FRS radios with VOX... this would be PERFECT, especially at $40, and would also let me hook up the cell phone (which would be pretty cool as well). _IF_ the work. So anybody have any experience with them? Bill | ||

Are those noise cancelling? I got the http://www.collettcommunicators.com/celsolo.html Collet Solo communicator, which is designed for a cell phone. It works exceptionally well in that application(I was doing 65 in the interstate and the person on the other end would not know I was even on a bike unless I told them) and would only need a little extra wiring for the connectors and push to talk button to work with an FRS radio. Setting this up is on my list of things to do, but in the meantime it works great with a cell phone. It's normally $59, but it has been on sale for $39 for a while now. | ||

I am selling my bagger and want to use my 2000 M2 for travelling. The farthes I would go would be within 500 miles of home. I want to get saddlebads. Does anyone have experience with various brands (Buell, RKA, etc)? | ||

Psycho, I have the Buell bags and tail pack. They worked GREAT for me on the Colorado trip. I used them along with an old Eclipse tank bag. BTW, I have an 2K M2 also. I'll post a pic this evening of my bike loaded up before I left on the trip. Did about 3000 miles in 6 days with no problems. Mikej has tons of travel miles with his M2, Buell bags and RKA bags. I'm sure he will chime in  ! Mike loaned me his RKA's to use for the trip but I didn't use them as my Buell bags arrived in time. The RKA's are bigger and hold more stuff. They are well built as are the Buell bags. I did loose a rain cover for one of the saddle bags. It blew off, I dont think they don't fit a securely as they should. Other than that, I am very satisfied with the Buell bags. ASB (one of the fine BWB sponsors) has new bags available also. Saw them in Colorado, they looked simular to the Buell bags, well built. I don't remember the price but I'll bet if you call ASB, Melanie will be happy to fill you in on the details. MikeJ, Your turn! Brad | ||

MikeJ is on his way to the airport... or at least he should be. I used the rain covers a few times locally on my Buell bags, and for about 500 miles on my half-vacation. Cinch them down good and make sure you have the corners of the covers tucked in well, they may flap/buffet some but mine stayed on. I also wrapped the tail cord in a half-hitch around the turn signal in case they did come off though. The RKA's have a tendency to sag under and try to hit the rear tire, but the internal cinch/lift strap is supposed to cure that. The people I got the RKA's from said they worked great as long as you used the internal strap, they rode with them all the way from Wisconsin to Florida and back if I remember right. The Buell bags are nice, but as noted are not as roomy as the RKA's, probably closer to the RKA banjo/teardrop shaped ones or a little bigger. If you add the Ventura rack system to your bike you'd be all set. For my trip I had the Ventura bag, Buell saddle bags, Buell large tank bag, 24" duffle bag sitting crossways on the back/passenger portion of the seat, and a camera bag with an upper compartment holding a 3/4 gallon canteen of water. Just your basic Buell RV. For overnighters you could probably get by with the large tank bag and a duffle bag across the seat in back, but tie it down firm. Stuff happens quick on the road and I don't entirely trust bungie cords. | ||

Bluzm2, Wow, that looks like my bike!! (see profile). I like the Buell bags too. Damn expensive, but they work very well. I used mine on a 1400 mile ride last summer and an 1100 mile ride this week. I've always had enough room for everyting. I think the tail bag was worth the money, I'm still deciding on the tank bag, though (kind of small). J.D. | ||

Orion, I like the Eclipse tank bag. Mine's really old, but they still make the same model. The map window is so yellowed it's tough to read the map! I did have to modify the mounting straps though. I picked up the plastic buckles and a length of web strap at Gander Mountain. Made new front and rear mounting straps. No big deal, just cut to correct length and slide on the clips. The rear strap stays on the bike under the seat. I remove the front straps if I don't have the tank bag on. The front plastic clips can drop down and interfere with the fork stops. I also stole an idea from MikeJ, he made up a little strap setup that you can use to hold the front clips in the same position as the tank bag. This lets you remove the bag without worrying about the front clips getting in the way of the fork stops. If you want, I can post pics from closer up. Brad | ||

Bluzm2: Tried to get the new shock, but my dealer didn't really go for it. Are they required to provide the replacement, or are some dealers just being nice? Also, I would be interested in pictures of the strap for the front tank-bag lines (if you have time). J.D. |
