Hey, folks. Perhaps someone can help me with this. I am the owner of two Buells, a 2004 Firebolt XB12R and a 2009 Ulysses XT. I no longer ride the Firebolt and will sell it next spring. It has always run well and the cooling fan appears to come on when the engine is hot (e.g. stop and go riding downtown in summer, riding the mountain road up to the local ski hill on warm days. It might run for a few minutes after I shut the engine off, then quits. This seems to me to function exactly right. The Buell XT fan seems to come on whenever the engine is running at over 2000 rpm, regardless of temperature, and shuts down at about the same rpm and does not run on after the engine is turned off. So first question is - is that normal? I know newer Buells had different engine mapping than some of the older ones, but I don't know if this is normal or not. Is this normal, or is there something I should do to make the fan work differently? Second question - On a trip this past fall on the XT, the "check engine" light came on. It would not shut down except if the engine was turned off (no matter how briefly), then it would stay off for about five minutes before coming back on. I should note that a couple of days prior to this, at a campsite I dropped the bike in the midst of an awkward turn on gravel. The bike was moving at a slow walk and no serious apparent damage, other than to my pride, but it might have something to do with the "check engine" light situation. I dropped it off at a shop, but by the time they got to it, the weather had cooled somewhat, and they could not get the "check engine" light to come on. As such, they could not find any error codes indicating what might have been wrong. When I picked up the motorcycle, the light came on after about 25 miles. However, it would go off again if the bike was coasting or under very little engine load. The weather at that time was quite cool, about 50 degrees F. Any suggestions as to what might be causing this problem and/or what I can do to rectify it? |

There are two modes of fan you can set with Buelltooth dongle - temperature dependant and speed dependant. It looks like your motorcycle ECM is set to speed dependant fan mode. If you have a Buelltooth dongle you can change the fan mode in ECMDroid application with an Android device with Bluetooth. I would not trust the shop. You can check the errors with Bluetooth dongle and ECMDroid application too. You also can connect Buelltooth dongle and ECMDroid and ride your motorcycle and log the data, then you can open the logged data file on computer with an ECM log files reading program and see if the temperature sensor or another sensors readings acted abnormally during the ride.
