I finally got a nice low-mile (2800) '08 XT and ordered the Buell branded belt from St.Paul. I plan on being a LONG way from home often over the next year and want to know opinions on carrying the spare with me. I have folks here in TN that can send the belt to me in short order if I don't carry it. -Also, since the belt on it is the original 13 year-old item, would you go ahead and change it out and keep the original as the spare? Thanks for the input! (I've heard rumors of stowing them under the airbox...any opinions on that?) THANKS! |

Yes, swap it out and keep it as a spare. The new belts are tight like a banjo string, so a broken in belt will be more pliable during a roadside emergency. Assuming it hasn't been sitting out in the sun I would imagine the belt is fine even at its current age, so I would wait until you do a tire change and then do it all at once. Speaking of tires, odds are it still has the factory tires, I wouldn't be comfortable doing any kind of sporty riding on them due to the age, so I'd be looking to get those replaced. The old belt will fold up nicely and fit out of the way tucked into the triangular gap of the topcase luggage rack.
