I just purchased my first Buell. It has 11k miles but the previous owner had it in storage. They replaced the battery, plugs, oil, gas, and tires so far. It starts and runs but seems to me very easy to stall when trying to get going (could be just how the bike is) and the throttle response seems slow. Any tips for maintenance and performance would be appreciated. I would love to get this Uly on the road but don't want to make any mistakes I could have easily avoided.

Don't start it too many times in a row with no properly warm up ,or your fouling the spark plugs.
You could go for a couple rides and see if things improve!?
If it still has the original muffler ,have a look if the valve and cable does work on the top front of the muffler.
Look between the underside of the engine and muffler while turning the ignition on.
The valve has to open and close on cycle.

I will check that. I will go for a local ride around too and see if things get better. If nothing improves I might try some decarbonizer or something that might help clear out whatever sludge accumulated from sitting. Thanks for the tip.

If it was stored with untreated fuel, there is a good chance the injectors are not happy. After the other checks mentioned, might do to try some injector cleaner, or a goodly dose of Seafoam, and put some miles on the bike. A ride of 30mins to an hour in length with the fuel additives could clear up the issue.

Hope this helps, Dave

Well I got to take a good look at the bike today. After I got the bike warm I checked the oil level (with the engine off) and oil poured out everywhere. : O

I did an oil and filter change because now I feel I can't believe anything the dealer told me. The primary oil also had large metal flakes on the plug and the oil was dark grey on the black pan. I have no idea what that is about but that seems bad.

With new oil in I drive the bike down the street and back and it seemed to have more power but is still slow to rev.

I also bought some SeaFoam and ordered spark plugs. I am going on a ride tomorrow and will throw the SeaFoam in as long as I can understand what those metal flakes were.

Metal flakes on the oil drain plug magnet is not really worrying (depending on the volume)
There is always some metal flakes and residue on the gearbox drain plug magnet with every oil change.
And most of it is in the early life of the bike because everything has to wear in on each other.

@Brother_in_buells that is comforting. Thanks for letting me know. It has been awhile since I have done my own maintenance. I have a lot to learn.

No problem ,this is a great forum with lots of knowledgeable people that are willing to help!
You can also ask questions about your new Ulysses in the big bad & dirty section.
Not much people are lurking in the tech section.
