Peter, guessing... this could be it: you had a nail in your tire and you repaired it with some cheap-and-easy glue spray. Then you did a burn-out on the Dyno and ripped your tire entirely. Right?

Sybren,
You're as close as anyone is going to get I think. I always use that goop that goes in the tyre to repair a flat as it happens.
Aaron picked up a nail before the last small ferry crossing when he was riding it. At Charleys I pulled it out, spun the tyre and plop, it stopped leaking. Great stuff. It didn't let any out until Charley was pulling max revs on the dyno. After the first one we noticed this spray over the tail piece, the seat and a littl on Charley's shirt. It held out until there was no goop left, so I pulled my tyre and fitted yours to get home. I repaired mine today.
I guess you get the free patch.....! Maybe you'd better talk to Aaron ...

Tell me about it. I own a bicycle shop and I hate it when people try to fix it with goop. It never works and if they don't warn me that they've used it, I'll ususally end up covered with it.

Has anyone ran a Buell race header on a X1 with S&S 4" bore cases? I am trying to install a used header that might be bent. The header hits the tappet blocks. With the head pipe hitting on the tappet blocks, the muffler won't go on the pipe. It hits the shock. Any ideas? The stock header fits fine.
Thanks
Jeff

Jeff,
It does sound bent if the stock one fits.

Tyre goop haters,
I hate the stuff when I have to replace a tyre too, but I've lost count of the flats over the years when I haven't used it, and never had a tyre go down when it's been in there.
Maybe it's a coincidence?

Jeff:

The 4" bore cases have the cam cavity and lifter blocks moved to the right .250, that could be the source of youyr problem. On a pre '99 frame configuration there is no problem.

Jose,
Have you tried any other aftermarket headers on S&S SA cases? The cam chest is actually moved out .5" on XL's. I kind of figured this was part of the problem, but because the stock pipe fit fine, I had hoped that the Pro Series would too.
Thanks

Buell pipes vary a lot. They must change their vendors 1/4terly. I have had 4 race headers, some fit well others poorly. When the ports don't match well they crack at the collector from stress and vibration.

You do have stock stroke dont you? Otherwise its fabrication time.

The engine is shorter stroke, 3-5/8, but uses longer rods, 7.113, so the overall enginen height is basically the same as stock. I think I am just going to run the stock header. The race header I have is a long ways from fitting.
Thanks

Jeff:

I'm curious what is the displacement 95? What heads are you using and what cam lift/duration did you choose. That formula is my ideal motor but with 3 1/2" stroke and individuual runner heads with a vertically mounted carb.

Jose,
It is a 91" (4" bore x 3-5/8 stroke) S&S is now offering this engine as a complete long block. I am runnig Andrews N9 cams. I don't remember the specs off the top of my head. The lift is .555. I am looking at some other cams to try something different. So far I am up to 109 hp and 100 ft-lbs. Last week at the Road America track day I was running a calculated 141 in the straights. The engine felt great. My gearing was off so it wouldn't pull up to red line in 6th, but that was fast engough for my first time out on a road course. I am running a Baker 6 speed with stock final drive pullies.
The dual runner idea rocks. I have some prototype pieces that I haven't been able to get sorted out but look promising. I haven't had time to get back to them though.

Jeff:

I would try a Red Shift cam selecting lift and duration based on your max rpm which I guess to be 7500 for your motor. Final drive needs to get lower to compensate for that .85 6th. You have gone up 18% or so in torque.

The Y manifold is HD's biggest bottleneck. Tilley bikes make 120 HP in 1200 cc trim, a full 15 HP more than what the same set up with a single carb.

I have been trying to find out. If you look at the heads they seem to be stock castings. It is possible that the front head is a stocker and the rear modified to reorient the runner in the opposite direction. Carbs are stock 40mm CV's (maybe even smaller throat) with likely no acc circuit and mofied jetting. Runners look like special castings.

Shumaker is supposed to make dual runner heads but I can't find the company anywhere. Baisley makes dual runner heads but their configuration is a reversed XR and will not fit out frame.

What I would like to do is to have an aluminum tank made that would allow a verical Webber throgh the frame. I know nothing about their cams.

Hi guys, You can get ahold of Shumaker at 419-238-0801, I don't think they have a website. I talked to them a couple months ago, they said they were in the process of making more heads, they can hardly keep up with demand! I don't know if Tilleys runs Shu. or their own. One thing about the dual carby bikes is they are real sensitive jetting-wise to all types of changes. A small change in exhaust or altitude or whatever can make a large difference in required jetting, and a huge differernce in power. Moperfserv has a website with a bunch of dual carb dyno testing he did on a Buell and a Sporty, I'll see if I can find the add.

Ray:

I remeber being at that site. They tested an S2 with S1 cams and no other mods except Shumaker heads and S&S carbs. The thing made 122HP. Tilley had a 3.75 x 3.6 motor with a single carb that made 118 or so. Jeff needs to work on some tuning. By my estimation his motor should capable of generatig quite a bit more power.

Jose, you forgot STD. They also make dual carb heads of the same design as Schumaker. Quite a bit cheaper.

I think I've got a prety good handle for converting my heads but not time. I'll tear into it this winter.

HI,

Just bought a 2000 X1. I'm looking to add a slip on muffler now, and some new pipes down the road for increase performance. There seems to be a million variations, does anyone out there have any recomendations? (The bike has 520 miles and as of today all Redline oils in it.)

Also, but I was considering picking up a "pro series X1 race air cleaner assembly, part # 91420-99y, out of the Buell apparal and accesories catalog from HD. Is this a good setup or is their a better air induction system out there? I'm a daily driver, back and forth to work and daily pleasure riders also.

And last of all, I'm open to any performance suggestions -- spark plugs, wires, etc. What do ya'll use that has proven performance boosting abbilities (and what is junk I should liik out for?)

I hope I'm not asking too much at once, thanks in advance for your help.

Tilley told us (Mike Roland and myself) that he welds up stock heads.
Unfortunately, Shumaker has failed to produce the separate inlet heads as well as the Top-Fuel heads for Roland. Mike has lost out on sales of dozens of top-fuel heads. The situation is so bad that there are 3 competitors for the dozen or so sales each year.
There is a program in the works to produce separate inlet kits. The problem has been that Mike works out of his home and doesn't have the kind of capital to do this stuff. All he can do is design the best ports available!?

Moperf:

Do you mean that Shumaker makes only a handful of these heads a year? Are these castings with CNC ports?

The problem is that he lost his machinist who had been doing the all CNC heads, and he hasn't produced any heads since then.

Anyone with a nitrous setup on their street Buell willing to post the details here? Pictures would be great. How long will a small (14 ounce) bottle of nitrous last? Nitrous sounds like THE easiest (cheapest) way to get a brief kick in the pants every so often.

About a year and a half ago I was working with the engineers at S&S with regards to a block that would work on a Buell. I recall coming up with the longer rods running a 3.625" stroke and the stock 4" bore. Seems like S&S did decide to build this after all.

I wound up saving a considerable amount of money by running the stock cases bored out to 88", with the AAC 3.8125" cylinders and JE pistons and the Yankee Enginuity Windage Tray Kit.

Jeffb, my 88" is making 120 HP and 105 ft-lbs torque using Andrews N4 cams and ported T-Storm heads. Duncan at YE recommends a 7200 RPM rev limit, he says that the engine is not feeling any strain. It runs as cool or even cooler than stock and it delivers 40-45 MPG.

Seems to me that I would rather spend $3500 than $10000 for the same or better results any day at all!!!
