Riding to work a couple of weeks ago my clutch stopped working (wouldn't disengage so I could shift). I borrowed my friends truck and got it home. I finally got around to check what was happening. My initial guess was that the cable broke in the primary case. When I removed the clutch inspection cover I could see that the cable was connected and when I moved the ramp it just moved freely. I removed the ramp and could see behind it, there was a broken metal ring. In the service manual for a 2005 Buell XB9R, on diagram 6-12 it is either item 9 or 10. I can't tell which until I remove the primary cover. My questions are 1. For a relatively mechanically apt person with limited tools how hard would it be to replace those items. 2. What are the part numbers? 3. What else may be wrong? 4. Should I find a good mechanic? Thanks for the help |

Can't open the pdf file on my phone ,but there is a big change that the edge broke off the primary cover. It's the edge that the clutch release mechanism pulls on. |

Brother in buells, You, Sir, are correct. I guess I need a new primary cover. Any idea what causes this or is it just one of those things |

It probably happened because it was adjusted to tight (clutch ramp still under pressure) and because the edge of the primary is very thin it finally cracked. My 2004 xb 12s had the same thing happening ,at that moment i owned it for just two years and never touched or adjusted it. But this is a known issue and there are enough repair options available for it. If you have a look in the link i posted, my repair is below the page. Had it welded up at a local shop and did the machining etc myself. But there are other options to! There are some on badweb that can do the repair for you. |

I also still have a primary cover that i used for only one weekend. It's the magnesium colour and for a 06 and above years (bigger shift axle/assembly) Oh i just did see yours is a 2005 ,so it probably has a small diameters shift axle. (Message edited by Brother in buells on September 22, 2016) |

Yes, an 05 so the smaller shift shaft and black I found someone who will do the repair so I am shipping it to him. I also replaced my rear brake pads today while the bike is apart. I did the front a few years ago. It took 20 minutes to do the brakes. Makes my want to do my car brakes next time and save some $$$$$$ |

There is a gentleman who posts on another Buell forum that offers a kit for someone to do the repair themselves or send it to him to refurbish. I'm not sure of the rules for links and such but I found it by a google search on Buell XB primary cover repair. |

The rules are more chill of late, but it is still nice to be polite to the active sponsors and members of this site. None of which, to my knowledge, have much of an investment offering to fix or sell kits to fix broken primary covers, which is a common enough problem. I'd say post details on contact information and cost. Especially if you have had first hand experience. Like you say, easy enough to google up anyway. |
