I just replaced the low fuel sensor on my 08 XB12XT. Easy job, I used the factory part. 1) Floor jack at furthest rear part of muffler to get rear wheel off of ground (tripods on front wheel, side stand, and jack) 2) Take off the clutch side footpeg assembly (3 allen screws to frame, SAE, and one nut to the bag mounts on a Uly, also SAE) 3) Drain tank via large SAE nut on bottom of fuel pump assembly. 4) Disconnect fuel pump electrical connector (you can get it from underneath without even taking off the seat off, though putting it back on is a little easier if you snap off the little trip piece that goes between seat and frame) 5) Disconnect fuel line (nut, SAE I think) 6) Remove lower shock bolt (Torx on one side, SAE nut on other) 7) Raise jack to lower swingarm as far as possible 8) remove 4 SAE allen head bolts holding in fuel pump 9) Put SAE bolt into removal jig hole in fuel pump (probably not necesssary, but helpful). Put vice grips on bolt, you can then use these to help wriggle out the pump. You could also use that bolt to attach a long bar, which you hold at the other end, and have somebody else hit with a soft mallet. But this probably won't be necessary either, see next steps. 10) Use flat bladed screwdriver to carefully pry fuel pump down and out. The sealing surface is up on pump assembly body, so little nicks from prying on that bottom plate mating surface won't cause leak. Still, don't hack it up, that just makes you look like a rookie. 11) Work pump assembly down and out 12) work pump assembly out of bike (it will just barely come out as little tetris puzzle, go slow and be careful, it is easy to scratch swingarm 12) Put fuel pump on bench and replace low fuel sensor with new part. I didn't cut cable tie, as it does two things, and I don't know if my off the shelf cable ties are fuel resistent 13) Put new o-rings on (see knowledge vault for non OEM parts source, or just order Buell parts 14) lightly oil orings and reassemble 15) lock-tite blue on screws to put pump back in. CAREFULLY tighten screws to re-seat pump. Work your way around so you don't get it in crooked and break an ear on the pump body 16) Assemble in reverse of disassembly. I think the whole job took under two hours taking my time. A really easy job. Non Uly's may be more problematic. There was just barely enough room to get the pump out on the XT and the X.
