Just got my 2010 XB12Ss back from the shop with a brand new ECM and cooling fan. (Old ECM died and took the old fan out with it; see here: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/384 2/765114.html?1436070466) It behaves differently from when I brought it in.

Previously:
-Something (fuel pump?) would make a brief, smooth "whoosh" when I flipped the kill switch on, but before starting the motor
-On starting, the motor would idle high (around 1600-1700rpm) and then drop to 1000-1100rpm as it warmed up
-If I let the bike warm up without riding away, the fan would come on high
-No sounds at idle other than engine noise (and cooling fan if the engine is warm)
-Fan would run while riding when the bike was warmed up, but would not run with the engine off

Now:
-Something makes a longer, creaky squeal when I flip the kill switch on
-Bike starts up and immediately idles at 1000-1100rpm; does not idle high while warming up
-While idling, I can hear a steady hum, like a quiet vacuum cleaner
-Fan comes on low if the bike warms up before riding away
-Fan still runs while riding as before, but now it will also run after I turn the key off

How do I tell if I have the most up-to-date ECM flash? Based on the symptoms above, I suspect I don't.

Anybody? Bueller?

Should the fan *ever* run with the key off, on a 2010 XB?

Nobody knows the stock eeprom ID for a 2010 XB12?

Many, many searches on BadWeB have still not turned up the info I'm looking for, but they strongly suggest the answer to my first question is "no."

At Longshot. My ST3 doesn't have a fan but it has been my experience that if one of my water cooled bikes are hot enough when I park it the fan will come on after the bike is shut off.

There are multiple calibrations for each model year, as they tweak the programming based on rider input and other data once the bikes get real world experience. Things like fan operation and idle did get tweaked a few times.

Every little change you noted is something that is controlled by the ECM, so it is not you going crazy.

Your old ECM had the older programming, and your current one has the newest programming.

Froggy, would they have tweaked the 2010 programming after Buell shut down in late '09? Previous owner had his dealer update the ECM on 7/19/2010 (yeah, I have all the records), so it just seems strange that I *wouldn't* have already had the most up to date programming.

Is it even possible for a dealer to install an older program?

Any idea what the ECM is controlling that would make the squeaky, whiny hum that I hear at idle? It's not the fan, and I've checked all the vacuum hoses to make sure they're not pinched.

Oh, and the "something" that now squeals instead of whooshing is the fuel pump.

I don't have dates of when the calibrations where released, but I know for sure there were calibrations released for the 1125s in late 2009 after the factory closed. The 2010 bikes were built for several months in 2009, it is very possible there was an update released between date of build and day that bike was at the dealer and got updated.

The whiny hum is the fuel pump. It is regulated by the ECM, they likely tweaked the regulation and between that and the lower idle you are hearing it more.

The dealer cannot install older programming, they plug in the bike, and only get a choice to update it, or if it was a new ECM they punch in the VIN and the computer determines the correct ECM to load into it, complete with putting the VIN in the ECM.

If you have the EEPROM off the old ECM, and it used the same firmware type, you could easily upload it onto your ECM using TunerPro

Okay. Thanks Froggy! That's peace of mind knowing the dealer can't install older programming, but still a bit mind boggling that it means the programming was updated again after July of 2010.

This is where I would be totally satisfied, except that with the low idle on startup, it sometimes stalls while I'm standing there putting my helmet and jacket on.

Well, thanks again for the info, and hopefully some other 2010 owners will find this thread useful!

I have an 08 XB12ss, and I've yet to have the fan come on when it's running... but does every time I shut it off.

I believe my ECM is flawed - rough running even though the whole motor top end was gone through (rings, re-hone cylinders, clean everything) this past winter. My current stock ECM does have a visible hairline crack. Before I open it up (and possibly destroy it) is there any info about other compatible ECM? Like, will a XB12R ECM work? Ebay has several, but it seems mine are the most expensive.

Anyone out there ever direct swap ECM between bikes and have results to report to the BadWeb? Thanks if you can help.

198rock, you can use an ecm off any 2008 or 2009 XB12 model without needing to reprogram anything. A 2010 ECM or 2008+ XB9 or 1125 ECM would also work but would need to be reflashed.

Also, I seriously recommend getting a Race ECM even if your bike has the stock exhaust, it significantly improves how the bike runs. Also is it cheaper than a brand new stock one

Got some resolution today. Took it in for a tire change and had them check the ECM. Turns out they had flashed the new ECM for a Ulysses (don't know which year). Had them reflash for my 2010 Long, and now everything's back to normal!
