I have a 98 S1W-it has been painted multiple times with various types of paint. 1-I need to strip the paint off the bodywork, including the plastic tank-what is the best method, I seen sanding, brake fluid, Castrol super clean, aircraft plastic paint stripper, but have any professionals used blasting (soda, walnut shells, etc.)I need it down to bare plastic. Chemical methods would seem to cause issues with leaching out of the plastic at a later date, but looking for advice. 2-Repainting, I've seen the post from Al @ American Sportbikes that gives the PPG codes and application advice, but that post is almost 8 years old-does anyone have any updates with regard to the info-as in new primer/paints from PPG (it's what I will be using)that are better/current? Also, I will be removing/replacing the gas cap/flange gasket, and it says in the service manual to seal all parts to the tank with Hylomar-is this still recommended? I know this has been covered before, but there seems to be conflicting info on whats best-I will be giving the info to my painter to apply the finish paint, and it would be nice to get it right the first time-Thanks! | ||

Ok I will give you the low down. There is no botom line correct way. You will get slightly variable opinions on whats is best. First stripping the tank use only elbow grease no chemicals or blasters you only need to go down to the base coat leave it in place if possible it is a factory seal which helps. second find a very compinant painter that is used to painting Nylon (Not Plastic there is a diffrence) keep all contaminates away very clean room needed. Als instructions are still the goto choice. The one common thing with all is cure time make sure that tank cures for weeks if not months let it cure till you can not smell any hint of paint fumes then wait a little longer It makes a good winter project. No need for sealant on the cap I have never used it and had no issues. after you have had the cap off for a long duration with no fuel in the tank the tank will shrink and you will not be able to mount the gas cap ring. Put 3/4 tank of fuel in it let it sit outside in the sun for an hour or two and it will expand back where needed. The biggest thing is these tanks let the fuel fumes permeate through the tank if it is not sealed and cured the fumes will bubble the paint. Also do not use simple Vynil on the tanks no matter what the will bubble you have to use the raised letter logos. The best solution I have ever seen is a guy on this sight made a Carbon cover so there was never an issue | ||

No wrap hydro dip etc would intensify the bubbling Also befor anyone asks there is no product that will seal the inside of the tank there has been attempts and they all fail. | ||
