Well I've buggered up two crankshaft seals trying to install them, at $14 each. The outside edge has pealed off and sort of bubbled. I have the installation tool. Lots of oil on all surfaces. Seal and spacer assembled first, then tapped into place. First time using the tool from the get-go. Second time tapping into place with the tool turned around to get things started. What am I doing wrong?

Maybe a bur in the bore? You could try beveling the outer lip just a hair with some sandpaper on a stick.
