So I was thinking about buying a exhaust and installing the race ecm, but I was reading that I had to take it to the dealership to reset the tps? I have the ecmspy and I know how to reset the TPS but I was reading that its not the same with the race ecm. Any suggestion? |

Depends on which Race ECM you have. The old Buell P&A Race ECM from Harley is compatible with ECMspy, but the EBR Race ECM is not. The free ECMspy predates the EBR ECM and does not properly support its firmware. Using the free ECMspy with it is known to corrupt the ECM. There is a newer version of ECMspy that you have to pay for, I am not aware if that is compatible or not. TunerPro RT is safe to use with any ECM, but it is a royal pain in the ass to get everything setup for it. |

I'm only speaking from my experience here. I am certainly not a computer savvy guy. I have an 04 XB. I bought exhaust and matching ECM directly from EBR last year. I had to reset my TPS as well. It was obvious. The check engine light would come on after a few minutes and the idle was all over the place. It was stalling, surging and bucking a bit too. I used the free Buell ECMDroid app, and a Bluetooth connector from EBay. I reset the TPS using my cell phone easy enough and it runs purrrrfect. I don't know how this relates to e spy though. |

Anybody ever tried to set a TPS with a EVOM(Electronic Volt Ohm Meter) ??? |

Buellistic, it can't be done like that. A TPS reset is altering the ECM programming, you have to turn the idle screw out all the way till it stops, this is position zero on the Throttle Position Sensor. From there, you press the button on the computer to tell it "This is where zero is, all throttle positions are relative to this". I suppose you could hack something together to change the voltages to match what is already stored on the ECM rather than do a real TPS reset, but that would be making a mountain out of a molehill. |

^ yeah. Agree. I do see some point to Buellistics post though. Or rather questions. Back in the 90's I was an ASE certified wrench at a Ford dealer. If you had to change the ecm for an issue nothing else was needed. If you had an issue with the TPS sensor and needed to replace it, you had to set it to a specified voltage at idle. Those ones in that day had slots for hold down screw holes. You would connect it to the computer (size of a refrigerator in that day) and just measure the idle voltage, physically rotate the sensor until it matched the specified idle voltage and snug it down. Check for a full 5v at WOT and done. This is different and I don't know why... but it is. It's almost like the ecm ships blank to the TPS position. I'm all ears to why this is, but in the end the TPS reset is easy enough not to try and out think it. When it comes to modern computers and the lingo.... if I can do it anyone can. |

This is the case. Actually new ECMs from the factory are totally blank, you need to download the right program using the Harley Digital Technician computer. That said, the method you mention regarding calibrating the TPS is more difficult to do, rather than jump through hoops trying to get it to a specific voltage and then buttoning it down, you simply unscrew it till zero, hit the button and readjust till you have the idle in the right spot. The sensors themselves seem to vary a bit from each other, and as the bike is ridden the sensor will drift a little, that is why it calls for a TPS reset every 10k miles. Personally I've found that after 10k they seem to never drift any further. |

I need my TPS reset on my 99 S3, and an awesome badwebber (Mighty mouse) has offered to drive 2+1/2 hours one way to reset it for me. But for the future issues/tuning, I want to be prepared. Does anybody have any details on the Bluetooth connector needed when using the Buell ECM Android app? Nicholas900 mentions it above. Thank you in advance. Mike, there are two main programs for doing resets, one is ECMspy (old free version), which is for Windows computers. There is also an android app called ECMDroid (free, in the Play Store). You will need a ECM cable or Bluetooth dongle to interface with the ECM. You can use the same wired cable for any Windows based program (ECMspy, Directlink, TunerPro, VDSTS, etc). You can also use the Bluetooth dongle for all those programs too (assuming you have a Bluetooth computer), but the Android app ECMdroid is only compatible with Bluetooth dongles, not the wired cables. In my opinion the cable is the better route to go, the cable is more reliable, no issues with paring to a device, and no worrying about dropping the connection in the middle of what you are doing. American Sport Bike sells the cable, I've seen people online like Xoptiinside sell both the cable and the Bluetooth dongle. |
