Shaggster, The B grind cams are what were found in the X1, Same as the screaming eagle hot ones or andrews n6 I believe. I picked up a low mileage pump on ebay for $30. The cams should be here tomorrow, so I guess I'll pull it apart and see whats up. The other heads you have, are they thunderstorm heads? if so, how much? Tom |

yes they are tom came off a 97 with under 2500 miles. they are complete with valves and valve springs and also have the pistons and new head gaskets. where are you located tom? I'd sell them for what I have into them $250 plus shipping or if shipping isn't bad I'd pay half. |

Well I have the new set of cams and lifters, and the oil pump showed up today.. Just havent had the chance to get at it yet. I did however poke around the engine with my stethoscope, and Im pretty sure you are correct about the noise.. it seems like it is originating from the intake valve side of the rocker box, guess I will see when I pull it apart. Will keep you posted Tom |

Run it with the top rocker box cover off and look to see if you can see it hitting on the casting of the lower portion of your rocker box cover |

Hi Shaggster I ran it yesterday with the top and middle rocker box cover off. I couldnt really see any place where the spring retainer was hitting!... I did notice there was almost no oil in the rocker boxs though! I swapped out the oil pump last night, but havent been able to take it out and see how the oil pressure is yet (rained last night) Tom |

What kind of flow do you have from your oil tank if you unhook the feed line from the oil pump? The noise came back on mine and I had bad oil lines and wasn't getting proper oiling to the top of the motor.. Replaced the lines and now everything runs like a dream. |

Shaggster, did you do a post mortem on the bad line and figure out what happened? Was it visibly damaged? Plugged? Some kind of internal lining failure? |

Internal lining failure in two spots, so it swelled inward and severely restricted the flow to the point of when the new oil pump would suck the oil line completely closed. |

Good to know that can happen, that would be a real lurking time bomb. |

2000 x1 with 15k, just to give you an idea of time and wear that mine handled before it gave up. |

Just as another datapoint, I had a 2000 M2 that likely used all the same oil lines, and it was running perfectly at 30k+ miles when I traded it in. So the lines *can* last. Sorry if you covered this in the thread already, but did you have anything like a low oil pressure light to warn you something was going awry? (Message edited by reepicheep on August 21, 2014) |

the oil light only flickered once shortly after I bought it but after that it functioned as it was supposed to.. or so I thought. |

Hi Shaggster... Ive been kinda of offline for while! So the same noise came back? And went away after you changed the oil line from the tank? Tom |

all is well with the buell now. currently working on a custom softtail frame that the buell is going to be donored into. I'm gonna send my jim's lifters in to be inspected and replace the collapsed one or ones and re-install them into the motor. |

Cool... Word of advice about "jims" I bought a bearing from them that was labelled as made in usa.. but was actually a chinese bearing that was repackaged... I guess I will change the oil line in the spring.. colder than a witchs tit here now Tom |

I have the old cams out, the new ones in, but Im just waiting for some seals and rocker box gaskets from JP cycle. I havent changed the hose from the tank to the pump yet, but It seemed to flow ok when I changed the oil about a month ago,, I guess I should prolly dump the oil again, and swap out the hose.. I cant wait to see how it runs with the new cams though,, WAYYYYY more lift on them |

Rod bearing - almost certain - get it open afore you wreck it completely! |

I dont think so,, , with a stethescope,, it sounds as though the noise is coming from the rocker boxes.. Not to mention, it is exactly the same sound as shaggsters video, and his went away... I ordered some new rocker box gaskets, and Im going to inspect everything in the top,, hopefully I can see whats making the racket.. |

Here is how it sounds now, after the new cams. Oil pressure is 5psi at low idle, and around 20 when cruising. https://youtu.be/I5b6dNrlQMQ |

did you change out those lines? that's way too low of oil pressure! it should be between 15-25 at idle and above 30 at riding rpms. also I would take a dremel and smooth out any rough castings in the rockerbox. did you run it with the rockerbox off to see what kind of oil delivery you are getting to the top? sounds like the top is running too dry. like mine was. |
