Some time ago, I ordered both red and white LED backlights from American Sports Bike to replace those in my instrument cluster. (note: they seem to be no longer in the American Sport Bike online catalogue) I sanded the tips of the LEDs down, as suggested elsewhere by Al. As I had hoped, the red backlighting is quite pleasing to (and easy on) the eye. The bright spots seem less pronounced than with white LED backlighting. While there, I replaced the oil pressure light with a red LED, but I left the other idiot lights incandescent for the following reasons: • The CEL glows ever so slightly with an LED in its place. • The turn signal indicator seems to require an incandescent to function. • I don't want the high beam indicator any brighter than it already is. In daylight, the lettering is reflective and appears white as usual (although the camera picks up a little bit of the red): A little less ambient light: And darker still: The digital camera seems to exaggerate the hot spots (at 80 and 220) as well as represent the cluster in a pinkish hue. To the naked eye, the cluster is nice and red. This picture might save someone else sorting out the polarity of the traces on the cluster board. Red dots indicate positive: (Message edited by dtaylor on January 20, 2013) |
