OK, my '09 XT has a history of blowing fuses (those of you who have had this know the drill - hot day and low fuel level) but because it won't blow the fuse on cue for the HD dealer and passes the current draw test they will not replace the pump under warranty. The last time it blew was very dangerous - on a side street, break in the traffic so pull out an it dies right in the middle of the road. The oncoming cars dodged around me but it was the last straw. I have an '06 X so have had the fuel pump out for the chaffing wire issue and even though my XT still has a couple of months warranty left I went ahead and pulled the pump to see what type it was and double-check for any wiring issues. This is the removed pump - two points of note. The protective cover for the internal loom that was omitted on the 06's by some penny-pinching stupidity has been returned so no chaffed wires. The really important thing for me was that the electrical connections to the pump are identical to the '06. This was a surprise to me because the '09 parts book shows a single plug style connector .  The pump is a Walbro F10000276 - I assume a special for Buell as I can't find any reference to it in Walbro part number lists. It is the same physical size as the older 521 pump used in earlier XB's but has the smaller inlet and a different pre-filter.   I have collected a few parts for my '06X to keep it alive as long as I can - among those parts are a couple of AC Delco EP274 fuel pumps - these are the equivalent of the Walbro 521.   So, once I realised I didn't have to change anything to fit one of these to the '09 I grabbed a Buell pre-filter (P0806.K) for the earlier style inlet and fitted the EP274. I used a small stainless screw clamp to replace the special clamp and this is the finished product.  This is a georator type pump with metal gears so is a little noisier than the original and it gave me a heart start because it took ages to prime. The bike runs perfectly so far - hopefully this is of use to someone else struggling with a fuse blowing bastard of a pump. I am really looking forward to getting some miles on this XT again - I had got to the point where I simply didn't trust riding it to work.  | ||

Resurrecting this thread - I'm having same problems w/ blown fuses on my 09 Uly under high temp/low fuel conditions. Ray or anyone else - with the benefit of time, please comment on whether replacing the pump with the Delco EP274 was a permanent fix. thanks much |
