Hello to all! first post but long time reader, you guys rock lots of good info on here. Ill just start at the beginning. It staretd with just the sprocket nut being loose until i realized that my outer taper bearings had found their way into my magnets in my flywheel (not fun to clean) I could see the inner bearing was still in good shape so i was confident no pieces got into the motor (changed oil anyways) put everything back together to spec in the manual. after about a forty mile ride primary breather had sprayed the whole rear of my bike. i clould tell the oils were mixing due to color. repeated dissassembly/reassembly. rode about 100 miles before i could really tell they were mixing AGAIN! i had been told the seal install tool is neccessary and also the it isnt, could this be my issue? is there some sort of break in period on the seal? im hoping to avoid taking the cases apart at this point in the year. 28000 miles 2000 M2 mobil 1 synthetic in both primary and crank. |

The seal install keeps you from seating the seal too deeply. If you seal it to deeply, the balls rub it, and will cut it in a few thousand miles (DAMHIK). You can make your own tool as well, something as simple as a hardwood dowel with a machined step on the end. You just need to control the seating depth. If that bearing isn't walking back out again, you probably just need to get the seal in right. Also, the factory spec for that stator bell nut is too low. Use the new XB spec (or just get it as freaking tight as you can freaking get it). Also, don't use mobil 1 gear oil in the primary (you aren't, you are using the engine oil, which is fine). You could do a little better with the Harley Formula+ (which is both synthetic, and has gear oil additives). But mobile 1 engine oil isn't bad either. |

Im pretty sure the bearing is seated correctly and not moving. could it be coming between the shaft and the thick metal washer inside the seal? it looked a lil rough but not too bad. i had formula+ in there the first time i changed the seal and decided to go with the gear oil this time. didnt seem to make much of a difference |

The difference is in how well the stator holds up to the detergent in most engine oils. Some have failed with regular motor oil in the primary case. Never heard of Mobil 1 synthetic eating one; use it in my motor. Still have sport trans fluid in my primary, but it won't last forever. |

ok, changed the seal for the THIRD time, still no luck. started leaking after about thirty miles. this time around I also changed the thick washer that the seal rides on. the shaft had a few small pits on it but nothing too severe though. using 20w 50 full syn and formula plus in the primary. I know i did not overfill, and i know i didnt put the seal in too far. thought maybe fuel in the oil? but the plugs look good and the bikes runs great other than the leak. Does anyone have any ideas? or can possibly refer me to reputable service person in the st charles MO area? |

Ugh. Hope it's not a crank or crank bearing problem. |

ya but I would hear that really bad when i rode wouldnt I? the bike seems to really be running well. it "shutter" a little on a strong start (I dont know if that means anything) how would I tell if my crank bearings are bad? |
