I will at some point pick up a CF airbox cover with larger air intakes on each side. Has anyone picked up one of these and then added some kind of mesh or screen to keep larger stuff (bugs) out of the airbox? If so, what did you put in, how did you attach it, and if you have any pics that would be much appreciated as well. Thanks

I know this is a couple months old but just in case, here is what I just did something similar to this to my 2001 X1. I cut the side of the airbox on the right side of the bike and then installed metal mesh over the opening. I used a dremel tool to cut the opening and then some sand paper and files to make the shape nice and smooth. I tried to find some nice aluminum or stainless expanded metal but I couldn't find anything that I liked. I ended up using brite aluminum window screen as the metal mesh to cover the opening. The aluminum screen is cheap and very flexible to go around the contours and shape to your bike. I used a loctite glue similar to contact cement. I applied it to the inside perimeter of the opening and then laid the piece of screen in and added more glue. I then removed the screen and let the glue on both pieces tack up for about 5 minutes and then re-installed the screen. I like the way it came out. The aluminum screen is ideal since its opening are small enough to keep almost everything out.

Hope this helps and I am not too late.

That looks fantastic. Thanks for the reply. I didn't completely follow your description when you were describing putting the glue on, but this might also have something to do with the assembly of components around your air box as well, as I'm not familiar with how the X1 is set up. Is the screen permanently bonded to the cover, or did you set it up so that the glue acts more like a seal / retention structure after assembly & the screen can later be removed for cleaning? I'm assuming that once I put a screen on the openings of an XB air box cover it will then be "permanently" attached, which I'm Ok with as long as nothing can come loose and possibly damage the air filter. Regardless, I appreciate the post and the pics. It really does look great. You did an impressive job. Thanks for sharing.

Sorry if my description may have been a little confusing, sometimes I confuse myself.

The air cover for the X1 is just that a cover. There is nothing else attached to it. The screen is permanently bonded to the inside of the cover with the glue. Hat I did was dry fit the screen making sure it fit the way I wanted it to before I put any of the glue on. On the inside of the cover I put a very heavy coating of the glue around the perimeter of the opening. I then placed the piece of screen over the opening and then put another layer of glue on the screen around the perimeter of the opening. Since this glue acts like contact cement I wanted to make sure I had plenty of glue on the screen where it was going to attach to the inside of the cover. I then removed the screen so the glue on the cover and the screen could set up for the 5 minutes that it required to get tacky. Once it got tack I re-installed the screen and was able to pull it nice and tight across the opening. I don't think the the screen will ever come loose with the amount of glue that I used. If you need me to take a pic of the inside of the cover let me know.

I think that I understand everything that you did to set it up now. Thank you for adding to the description. You don't have to remove it just for a picture, but by the same token if you have it off sometime and snap a pic please do add it.
