I am preparing to pull the engine on my 98 S3 to split the cases due to the rear piston coming apart and dropping debris in the case. I'm new to this bike but not the Sportster engine.I still have my 01' Sporty that will have to go for this. I've done 2 883/1200 conv. 1 1200 piston upgrade to JE pistons and cams but never gone this far. By no means an expert. Any advise or pitfalls I should be aware of? I would be very thankfull. I have wanted a tubeframe Buell for about 10 yrs since riding an S3 and X1. Finally have one, bought it wounded, but now have to make it run again and enjoy. Thanks very much. |

It will require a press to push the crank out of the left side of the case and it requires a special tool from Jims to put the bearings back on the crank on that side when you go to put it back togther. |

Dan, If all he's doing is splitting the case to clean it up, does he really have top pull the crank all the way out? You should be able to flush the rod bearing and the left crank bearing if you are thorough right? Just wondering.. Brad |

Man I hope I don't have to push the crank out. Im almost there last thing is to remove the isolator bolts and I should be able to lift the frame up and off. Hopefully my makeshift engine cradle will hold well and I can do this with succsess. How would I post a picture. You should see this grenaded piston. Thanks guys for your interest and input. |

Brad, You are right. if all he is wanting to do is get debris out of the bottom then yes the crank can stay in the left side of the cases. Guess I am just too used to taking them completely apart that I wasn;t seeing what he was trying to do. |

Thanks Dan, I thought that was the case. I was just trying to remember from when I had my M2 cases apart for a new crank. Brad |

I have the engine on the bench. Pulled all the case bolts following the manual and I cannot get them to separate. Using a rubber hammer. Even tapped with heavier hammer using a block of wood at the swing arm mount.Been at this point for hrs. I must be missing something. Thanks for any suggestions! |

Can't speak to Buell cases (haven't had to split any yet), but on all the dirt bikes I have done, those cases can be stuck together pretty tightly. I don't think I could split them with a hammer at all, I have to use a wheel puller (threaded jack that presses on the crank in the middle, straddles wide, and is bolted into the case to either side). For what that's worth... |

Hey man, whateva you do, dont distort your cases. a block of wood and a heavy hammer is about the limit, i cant speak for buell casings but the riceburners use a hollow locating spigot at strategic bolt/screw holes to line up gsks etc. These tend to rust and in combo with a bit of ally corrosion can keep the cases seriously tight. work carefully around the bolt holes with wood and hammer, also that swing arm pinion i would guess is going to be seriously stubborn. My turn next, so guess i'll also be having the same! Good luck! |

Hey I got it! While stressing not to hurt anything, finally gently prying on a ledge by the swingarm mount I started walking around the case with thin flatblade screwdrivers and tapping the case with the rubber mallat. I know you can damage the sealing surfaces so was very carefull After about 10-15 in of that I got them apart. Whew ! Pieces of piston falling out and a big sigh of relief. Thanks very much to all who chimed in, realy appriciate the help. Better luck to you Andersonhdj when you do yours. Thanks again. |
