Hi, my check engine light comes on intermittently when I'm riding and the indicator lights flicker as well. I've tried to check the error codes by using the diagnostic plug which I believe is located under the seat on '09s as indicated in the picture. I'm using a wire to short the two pins but I'm not getting the blinking lights with the codes like I think I should be. Am I doing it wrong? My understanding is that I need to connect the two pins then turn the ignition switch on, do I need to set the engine switch to "run" in order to see the codes? Any help would be appreciated.

Yes, you need the switch to be in the engine run position. |
