My bike is an 03 XB9 that I converted to an an XB1250 with NRHS jugs, pistons and ported heads. The bike has about 6000 miles since the conversion and I have a persistant code 13, 02 sensor lean. I am also running a Dobek tuner on the bike for the last 2500 miles or so. The XB12 ECM was remapped on the dealer dyno at new engine install (they mapped it a bit lean, hence the Dobek controller that made a HUGE difference). Here is the deal. If I cruise at steady 3500 to 4000 rpms for about 3 miles, the red light comes on. If I cruise around town doing full throttle blasts, it never comes on, only closed loop and steady cruise. The dealer I took it to last week sucked and was of Zero help with this problem or a charging problem I repaired. I changed the O2 with a new one about 3 weeks ago and repaired a small header pipe crack (the headers were off a wrecked bike for the conversion) but still the light comes on. I can not feel or hear any other exhaust leaks. With the original XB9 motor the light never came on and all the fuel injection sensors are from the low mileage XB12 doner wiring harness. Also I have a fuel bobble (feels like fuel) at 4000 rpms under slow acceleration. Under WOT the bikes screams and part throttle seems OK too. I tend to think these two issues may be related to each other. I have a spare air temp sensor I am going to put in for grins. I checked the knowledge vault and could not find anyone with this problem. Any help would be appreciated. Chris the Big Buell Guy

Take the Dobek off, it is what is causing your issue. Get the bike properly mapped for your setup, and your issues will go away |

Froggy, The issue was there prior to the Dobek. Has had the problem since the engine swap. Thanks for the comment. |

How'd you do the airbox cover? That's neat looking. Was the problem there from day 1? If so, it sounds like the tune is just wrong. You have a heavily modded engine, so it might take a lot of invention to get the fuel maps dialed in correctly. |

I have not ruled out the fuel map, but before I reinvest in a new dyno session with a tuner I want to rule out sensors and such. A dealer in N. Miami did the tune (will not go back there) and it was a bit on the lean side, but I rode it that way for 7 months. The Dobek helped a ton with a tad richer mixture. As for the tank, it is vinyl, like a truck or van wrap. I gave a local van wrapper some pictures and he put it together for me. At some point I am changing the flag for carbon fiber but will keep everything else. Thanks for the comments |

Clever! Mind me asking how much it cost? I have a Uly tank with a Corolla mark on it, and need to either replace the sticker on one side, or come up with something else. I could come up with some fun ideas for a wrap if the costs are about the same. Sounds like it was mapped wrong from day one. I'd get it on a dyno with the 4 gas analyzer and dial in the fuel maps... that will get you mapped right, and simultaneously make it really clear if you have a bad sensor. For that matter, just running ECMSpy (or similar) with the dongle thingy will let you pull readings from various sensors, which should give some good hints. I'd definitely ditch the Dobek though. It's duck tape, and isn't necessary now that we can twiddle with the ECM directly. |

....02 sensor lean ..... re-mapped ECM .... on the lean side ... IMO, you have answered your own question. Would seem a new dyno session is in order. The ECM being lean, it can't keep up with 'closed loop' operation. The difference with the added fuel controller would seem to confirm that. Froggy and Reepi's advice about ditching the Dobek is based on experience here; it seems no one has gotten good results with an add-on controller. They just don't get along well w/the Buell FI system. And nice job on the bike! I like it, and the tank really looks good. |

Thanks for the advice. Does anyone know a good Buell tuner in south east Florida ? I do not trust the dealers down here. I heard there is a good tuner in the Tampa area but that is way out of my area for a day trip. As for the tank wrap. I paid the guy $250 to wrap it. Some was set up time for the graphics which I will not gave to pay again and in installation fee to apply the wrap. The surface has to be paint ready smooth or any imperfections will show through the vinyl . Thanks for the thoughts. |
