On a road trip outside the US and trying to track down a parasitic drain issue on my '08 xb12x. Build date July '07. Is there a definitive way to determine a potential IC parasitic draw condition? No Harley dealerships within 2,5000 miles. Is there a work around around to the issue? Pull fuses or disconnect battery when stopped for the evening? Thanks in advance DB |

I'm not sure how to help you troubleshoot off hand, but yea I would disconnect the battery at night till you figure it out. If you feel like digging into it, you can use a multimeter on the battery to measure the draw, and then unplug the IC and see if it changes any measurable amount. The IC should be using next to nothing, just to keep the clock and tripometers from resetting. Another thing to check would be the ECM, there was a bug on early 2008 1125R's (uses same ECM as your bike), the ECM would not shut down properly and it would drain the battery overnight. I've never heard of that happening on a XB, but you never know. |

Thanks Froggy. Battery getting frighteningly low after sitting for a few days, triggering check engine lamp. Slow charging when running well. I suspect something funky with the stator, and I DONT look forward to fixing out here. Maybe IC because it seems from my research that among other things, there was an parasitic draw issue with some bikes in my year range, where the IC saps juice although the switch was turned off. Will check the ECM. To think, I bought a new multimeter for this trip from Radio Shack. And now when I need the thing, it fails. You get what you pay for . . . Which reminds me, here's pick for the hell of it. You get what you pay for . . . . except in Venezuela, where I paid nothing for top quality gas to cross the entire country. NADA. The actual value of the fuel I was using was .8 cents. Just wasn't worth the trouble so the gas attendants waived me on so they could get busy with a line of waiting F350s . . . DB

How much parasitic drain is acceptable? Can't fine it in the service or electric diagnostic manual. DB |

I may be wrong on this, but if the 08 XBs are similar to the 1125s, a procedure was recommended here to shut off the engine using the RUN/OFF switch before turning off the key. This supposedly would keep the IC from drawing excessive current when shut off. Don't know if this is really true or if it will work with your bike, but it's worth trying. |
