Hi guy's i've always liked the exotic, wanted a v twin but not a cruiser or summat everyone else had. Got a Buell 04 but has a knock, bought it from a guy who'd got it from an insurance sale i assume as it had been down the road albeit not badly as i can see. He was upfront about it and i bought it eyes open but sight unseen. I am not displeased but the knock bugs me. i have been through a couple of the threads that indicate primary drive could cause a fair amount of racket and have adjusted it as described, the noise has come down a bit but i'd like to know what sort of common problems occur internally and whether i need to open her up or not. I am going to run her like this for a bit, there is not discernable miss or lack of response so i'm not convinced there is a valve train problem but it could be.She ran for a bit when she arrived and then promptly died on me, know the symptoms so pulled the plugs and sure enough they were glazed completey shiney black indicating overfuelling. This guy has been battling to sell, been on the net for over 6 months and i think been starting and running for 10 secs a time which means she hasnt really had a good run in a while. Would appreciate some input! |

So a bit more in this saga discovered. It isn't an 04, it's an 03, prob cos everyone's riceburner crazy here is RSA. A butcher had hold of it by the looks of things, the rear plug hex had been ground down to fit whatever socket this idiot must've had, the primary chain was some what loose, the oil content in the gearbox/ primary casing was way low. Found the vent line from the cambox back to the dry sump completely undone under the sprocket cover. The oil tank is overfull so either it bled fuel into the sump or said idiot just filled it up with whatever he had. Suspect the oil grade is totally wrong, here our ambient seldom falls below 16 deg C, manual recommends a 50 weight oil at these temps, so that will be my next step. Knocking is definetely a little quieter at idle but picks up at about 2k, suspect as foregoing, no viscosity left in the oil. Is it still possible to hook a version of ECM spy from someone? Im'e a total newbie to this, will this also allow me to set the TPS up? Cheers fellas! |

Where is the knock coming from? If you are hearing a whine or howl coming from the bottom of the bike and shifting it into neutral or any other gear changes the sound (or pulling in and out of the clutch) likely you have a failing transmission. Check the seal on the transmission shaft for damage. If there is damage, the drivetrain is Engine and valve problems are not hard to fix. Even if the cylinders and rings are scuffed and the valves are burnt, these engines are so simple they are easy to work on. You don't even need to take the engine out of the bike to work on these things. The transmission is another matter entirely. The pre 2008 Buells feature the old, primitive Baker-style transmission parts but without cassette access. You will have to remove and break down the entire engine, replace all the gears, shifter forks and shafts: new gears do not mix with old ones. And these parts are EXPENSIVE. With the XB models, the transmission is much more important to keep healthy than the engine. Change those fluids often. |

to search for the loc of a knock, take a ruler, or stick, aluminum is best, and while running, (hope you get it running) go around the bike, with your ear to the ruler, and the noise will be louder at the loc of the knock, and you'll know where to begin looking for the problem, when you find the area the knock is in post again. |
