Yesterday afternoon I was getting an intermittent check engine light. I thought that it might be a loose ground somewhere, so I started poking around, only to not find anything. This was disappointing at the time. I really hate not finding the problem. Then today, as I was going back to work from lunch, the CEL came on again, but this time the engine started to run rough. Five times on the way back to work, the CEL came on, then the gauges and clock completely blanked out and the bike sputtered. The engine fired back up on its own, the gauges did their self-diagnostic, and the clock was reset at 1:00. The bike finally died just as I was rolling into the parking lot at work and then would not start again. Then I finally figured it out. As I was checking for a loose connection again, the positive wire terminal on the battery was very hot. I immediately knew that this was the source of the problem, so I cut open the red heat shrink tubing over the battery cable to find that both of the red/yellow wires had broken at the crimp connection. This is the main battery power and auxiliary power wires. Seems that when I was poking around earlier, I made it worse, but I am glad that I did. I have crimped these wires into their own terminal and reconnected to the battery. All is well again. |
