Hi I have an 08 XB12X Uly and there seems to be a leak from the top gasket of the head. I've already bought a new upper and lower gasket and replacement fiber/gaskets for the screws. I think all that is left is to figure out how to rotate the engine in my garage or at the Military Base Hobby shop. How should I support the bike while I do this? What would the McGiver solution be if I don't have specialized equipment? After removing the bolts holding the engine in how do I rotate it safely to work on the rear head? I'm big and strong. I heard someone had pictures on the site of a XB12 rebuild but can't find them. I have all 3 manuals, parts/service/maint. Service manual has a nice section on rotating the engine for headwork. It's very specific on how the get the engine to rotate but I don't have experience with engine work so I'm fuzzy on how to manuever everything else. Any advice would be appreciated! -Chris Smith Colorado Springs, Co |

Chris, How did you make out with this project? I have noticed a leak in the exact same spot. Was repair straight forward with no surprises? Thanks Curtis |

Rocker box gasket leaks are somewhat common on XB motors. The OEM gasket is not as good as the aftermarket gasket. Also, if youve re-routed the crank case breathers this supposedly puts more stress on the gaskets due to the air having to travel a longer distance to escape. My re-route had the tubes going to the rear of the bike and emptying back of the seat. When I replace the RB gaskets I plan on routing the breather plumbing forward of the engine for quicker escape. Below is a link for a pictorial on engine rotating. If youre replacing the gasket I think you'll need to rotate the engine down a little further than in the write up. Good luck - it will take the better part of a day but it is by no means 'major surgery' link: http://www.buellxb.com/Buell-XB-Forum/Do-It-Yourse lf-Buell-Mods/How-to-Rotate-your-engine--With-Pics |

The old style paper tuber rocker box gaskets were junk, but the new metal style (for XB and Tuber) have seemed worked well for me. |
