Well (Aaron, hint hint), since I need to pull my motor down anyways (had a head bold come loose on the rear cylinder) to replace gaskets and I am going to do the head work and cam stuff while it's down. Anyone use the total seal rings? According to their website (http://www.totalseal.com/gaplesss.html), they help reduce blow by as the rings wear in. I wasn't planning on boring the cylinders, just a quick hone job, so what size should I get? I am having a friend help me, but I want to order all of the parts prior to breaking the thing open. You can get some good ring seal with the gapless rings, and I generally see leakdown numbers in the 1% range when using them, but ... (you knew that was coming, didn't you?) More than once I've had trouble with pulling oil down the guides while using them. That's my only gripe about them. As far as size goes, TS should be able to help you ... we don't carry rings for stock pistons. We carry the gapless top sets for 3.515 and 3.563 bore. Stock bore is 3.497.

I know that you guys sell the guides and valve seals, but is there a good combo to use that may help prevent the oil being pulled down the guides? Or have you guys not played around with that? |

Yes, but ... it's not my favorite setup. I don't much care for the guide that goes with it, it's not great for flow and doesn't offer as much clearance to the retainer as I like to see. We sell gapless stuff, but I try to make sure people understand right up front that they may get some oiling issues. That said, there are several successful motors running around with them, including that 124hp M2. Which has a 3-page spread about it in the August Ironworks, BTW. |

I talked with the Harley guy at Total Seal (he said that Blake's dad(?) bought his M2, if that makes any sense) and he recommended that I use only a gapless second ring (p/n T4616-5) for a .005 over stock (to make up for the hone job). He also recommended that I go with a positive valve guide seals from Kibblewhite or Cometic. I have ordered the guide seals, and will be calling Nallin this afternoon or tomorrow to get the new guides and I guess seats to complete the new parts stuff. As for running the gapless ring in the second position, he said that using a gapless ring in the 1st position on the street will draw oil down the guides and should be used for racing engines only, unless I want to keep pulling the heads and put new seals in. He's the pro, so I guess I'll take his word for it. Karl |
