Pete! Damn good to see you here again. But c'mon mate... Simple? Cheap? Buell wins that contest hands down. How much would that regulator have cost at the dealer? Besides, not many of us are up to building our own electrical components. Compare that regulator and other parts to the low replacement costs of most Buell parts and you will find Buell parts are significantly less expensive than their Japanese, Italian, German, or British brand counterparts. Let's see, admittedly Buell has had their share of systemic problems...

1. Isolators... (fixed)
2. Rear Shock... (fixed)
3. DDFI... (fixed)
4. Muffler mount... (fixed)
5. Overheating... (fixed)
6. Intake Seals... (fixed)

Now let's consider maintenance costs...

1. No chain to lube or replace.
2. No multiple carbs to synch.
3. No valve adjustments required.
4. No radiator/coolant to maintain.
5. No wheel bearings to pack (sealed bearings).

I guess what I'm saying is, yeah, Buell has had some problems, but you gotta admit that they have done a good job of addressing those problems and for me with nearly 30K miles on two bikes I've seen a kickstand safety switch failure, and a leaky rear rockerbox gasket. Both were repaired to never cause me grief again.

I am interested in the real story though. Am I the rare lucky one? If everyone will fill in the "Problems" field in their user profile, I'll do some honest statistical analysis and report it here. We need everyone to respond though to make it a valid analysis. Y'all update your profile by clicking HERE and then follow the directions until you get your profile on-screen, then edit the "Problems" field. I'll do the sorting and analysis myself, so please be assured that your profile info will remain confidential.

Now, I'm off to the NYC IMS.

Again, good to see you Pete. How's SATCOM going in Oz these days?

Blake

You are such a gentleman and so compassionate. You are also correct on everything you wrote above, but it appears that, as the saying goes (you can please some of the people some of the time, but you can't please all of the people all of the time). I don't understand why some Buell owners have bad luck with their bikes and others don't. I just know that after thirty years of riding I can only say good things about my Buell and the company that made it.
I went to update the "problems" section of my profile and realized that it was correct as it was posted. And for those that say " only 3000 miles on the Buell in one year" keep in mind I put in the same period approx 8200 miles on the dresser,1500 miles on the KLR, maybe 1000 miles on the ATK (no speedo).
I am excited everytime I can ride the X1 and look forward to the future products from Buell.
Just my 2 cents.

Hi Blake,

It's good to be back. I've been an occasional visitor for a while. LOL, and yeah you are right. Mr Suzuki wanted more than $300 (can you remember what $300 meant in 1980?) for a regulator I could do better for $20. But down here Buell ain't so simple or so cheap. OK, my background is electronics and when it comes to the mechanicle side I have only a history of prepping stock cars (HQ class). I flashed out $20k for my X1 and I've spent another $6K since. I know the Aussie dollar is small potatoes to the U.S dollar but that is still a big wad to me.

Hmm to your lists:

1: Isolators. I was lucky and have never had a problem (Kudos to Buell for dealing with this problem)

2: Rear shock. Not so good. I'm running an M2 shock on my X1 at the moment. The shock on my 99 X1 died and it wasn't covered by the warranty. Buell said they would fix it anyway (thanks for that) but at least a 3 month wait here for a new shock. If my dealer hadn't stolen a shock from an an M2 that was going to be long term in the shop (for major problems) I'd be off the road right now.

3. DDFI. Sure if you pay the money ($650 here) you get a DDFI that performs as it should have on the original $20k bike. I thought I spent enough up front to get a fully sorted Bike. I guess not.

4. Muffler mount. The day my dealer has a 2001 muffler mount to replace the peice of crap I have I will have died and gone to heavan. The shock is a short wait by comparison.

5. Overheating. LOL let me tell you the last time I pulled out of traffic to have a smoke and let the bike cool down because 42c heat and slow traffic were killing the X1. Water cooling, wherefore ar'te though.

6. Intake seals. OK, from my first day with the bike when it took me 2 hours to cover 30km because the intake seals were shot and the computer kept shutting it down I've never had another problem.

On maintenace costs. The X1 is the cheapest bike I've ever taken in for a routine service. You have got to love that belt versus a chain. Sooo trouble free.

But the bottom line is I still have a bike that has cost me nearly $26k to make it reliable, fast (ish) and fun to ride when I could have bought an R1 for $16K. Faster, more reliable and better handling and that $10k difference is a lot of servicing.

Why do I persevere? I guess I have the same disease every other Buell owner does.

But trust me, I'm never going to jump on the bandwagon and say the Buell is reasonably priced, reliable, fast, at the forefront of handling, or an example of fine engineering because it is none of these. It is an anachronysim in a world were no bike is bad and all do what the are designed for competently except Buell.

What keeps me going? I love the damned thing on its good days. Hitting the Toolangi forest road and blitzing all comers renews my faith in her. My dealer is the best in the world. They have slipped me more free parts than I can count. Most stolen from demo bikes to keep me on the road and so they can bill them to Buell. I guess the fact that they need to do that is the biggest criticism I have of the bike.

SATCOM is the main reason I'm so rarely here these days Blake. Work is madness at the moment. Long, long hours. So nice to have the X1 to jump on in the evenings and blow out a couple of cobwebs before I have to hit the serious stuff again.

Ride safe

Pete

Hi!

Well, until Tuesday of this week I had never ridden an American motorcycle, let alone a Harley (I'm from London) but I visited my local H-D dealer and had a demo ride on an M2. I'm hooked! Currently I ride a BMW (I'll say that quietly!) R1100S with various mods but have decided that after this Summer's touring trip to Italy I fancy a complete change. An afternoon riding the M2 was enough to convince me that this would be my next bike. I'm weighing up as to which model to have - the X1 or the M2. I prefer the look of the X1 without a doubt (I just LOVE that ally rear sub-frame) and like the riding position more. I haven't ridden the X yet though. I've posted a similar question on the UK Buell Enthusiast BB and they have already been a most helpful and friendly bunch, the choice of bike being split roughly 50/50. Good thing though is that I took my wife to see these beasties today and she loved them (wait till she hears them!!). Reliability is obviously a bit of a worry but it would appear that the 01 models, and as time goes by, that this will be less of a problem. So, I'm looking forward to my new bike. Just need a little bit of guidance from you experts!

Many, many thanks.

Richard aka Gromit (it's a long story!)

A carb seems to be more predictable to work with when altering intake and exhaust . . . that's why I shy-ed away from the X1 and bought the M2 . . . but some people know how to make the fuel injection work fine, although it probably costs more to augment. Computers are expensive -- fuel jets are cheap

Gromit,
Does the story involve Wallace and Grommit?????

Anyway, I like carbs, but f.i. is fine too but just takes a bit more to troubleshoot when it acts up (at least for me). Realistically f.i. is probably more efficient and can be a better performer, but I still like a carb.

And BMW's are fine bikes, I'd like to have one some day, just can't afford one.

It sounds like you've already decided on the X1. Maybe your wife can get an M2 as a stablemate.

Mike,

Yes, it does - someone reckoned that when I smile, I look like Gromit as in...well, you said it! The name stuck - what flattering friends I have.

As to the Buell - thanks for the tip. I too like carbs, sound better for one thing and as there's only one, no balancing problems etc. I just love the look of that X1 sucker - she's just beautiful. Sounds a bit fickle I know, but it just does it for me. It would appear tht the FI problems are getting less and less and undoubtedly it is the way to go in terms of reliability and engine longevity. Plus, hopefully, lower maintenance. I've had 3 boxers now, all with injection and it just does the business although it can be downright nasty if out of balance. Also, the chance in the future to get different eprom chips to give varying power curves (BBPower in Germany do superb stuff for BMW's, hopefully, Bernhard can be persuaded to look at Buells, his product is superb - I use one and it works a treat!) would be great. There is a real supply shortage of Buells in the UK at the moment but I don't really mind - keeps the bike rare, just how these beasts should be served!

Thanks again,

Richard.

Richard (Gromit),
Just as another possibility to consider, Pammy in Florida, as well as a few others, have converted their f.i. bikes to run a carb. In other words, you can have your X1 and a carb too. (Is that like having your cake and eating it too?). Just something else to think about.

Gromit,

I've been going throught this since I first rode a Buell in '99. Came home and sold my HD Road King! I couldn't resist the look of the X1. If the FI turns out to be a problem, I'll convert her to a carb, but I'm going to give the FI a chance. I looked at all the twins : Beemers, Ducks and RC51's. The RC51 is a HELL of a bike on paper but it just dosen't have the flash and SOUL of an X1... M2 or X1? Buy the one that makes you SMILE.

Chris,

Now there speaks a man in touch with his heart! You're so right of course - no-one makes a 'bad' bike now so generally speaking, one can buy a bike with the heart these days, with a bit less of the 'head'. On tuesday I've reserved a 'back2back' demo on M2 and X1 at Warr's of London - a well-respected H-D dealer. The one which makes my heart sing will be the bride. Can't wait!

Christopher,

If you think the RC51 doesn't have the "Flash and soul" of and X1 or an M2 then you haven't ridden one. It does everything better than the Buell. They aren't even close to it.

You are right Pete I haven't ridden one, I've seen one. And IMHO the RC51 looks like any other Crotch Rocket, nothing special. I've also grown bored with the markups(1, 2,3k over retail) on them like they were a HD ;-) And like I said ON PAPER ( and on the track ) it's a hell of a bike, but I live on the street not the race track. As much as struggled with admitting it to myself, I'm going to spend 99% percent of my time in the 2 digit speed range and for ME the Buell is better. I'm well aware of the Buell's shortcomings...I lurked this board for 2 years. The Honda shop in town HAS an RC51 in stock, I could have gone either way and I thought Looooong and hard about it. I expect I'll have problems with the Buell, it's not a Honda :-) I had a CBR600F3, never needed anything but gas, oil and tires...I've got two Honda CR's in the garage right now. I spend most of my two wheel time on dirt, and it's not like I dislike Honda's ;-)

I think you missed the point of my earlier message: 1) I do think the RC51 is a GREAT bike and if you're going to get one please don't take offence at my comments...they are my feelings on a bike for ME.

2) Get the bike that makes YOU happy, if it's an RC51...M2...X1...VFR...Beemer...Duck... If you like it, that's cool by me, I'll ride with anybody out to have a good time! :-)

Peter: Go get you some grouchy boy. You are way too cranky and bitter over some silly problems you had with year one of a new bike model with a new FI system... SURPRISE!!! But, guess what, the new 2001 models are all worked out, so why whiz and moan continuously about '99. Get over it already! Anyone that thinks a Buell "Sportbike" is trying to compete with an RC51 "Repliracer" has their head up a dark and and dank crevace.

Don't expect your X1 to blow your wad okay. No bike is gonna do that. Go get you some.

Hi Folks,

If you'll allow me to chip in here - I know I'm not the full Buell owner yet, but here's something I thought I'd relate to you. Back in 88 I had a Laverda RGA Jota which was tuned by Slater Brothers (UK). This was the fiercest, most angry, obnoxious, attitude-packed bike I had ever clapped my eyes on. When it sat idling it just frightened me, in a wonderful way of course! It made people cower it was such a beast. The only bike which has done that to me since was the M2 Cyclone I rode last week. It had the Vance and Hines race muffler which made it, to me, sound simply awesome. As it stood there warming up on idle, it looked as though it should have flames coming from its nostrils! Made my heart beat faster I can tell you watching this almost living creature bellowing away like some angry guard dog. The SP1 and its ilk would without any doubt whatsoever run rings around the Buell, chew it up and spit it out. However they don't tug at my heart strings and for me that is why I yearn for the American Beauty!

Got a ride on the X1 tomorrow - can't wait!

Richard.

WOW...I'm sorry it took me so long to find this site! with so much goin' on.

As for DDFI..it shouldn't be a problem IF:
you make sure the 5 sensors are workin' properly and adjusted correctly AND
the ECM is re-mapped!

I have the race ECM and have still had it custom re-mapped by the factory..new revision. Just the re-mapping took care of all of the DDFI problems and overheating. I am just now goin' through the rocker gasket issue. Rear shock just gave out (new one on order) and 10000 mile service next.

As for the dude with the RC51...Anytime, anyplace! I already know I got you beat....Been there, Done that...with a little Buell mods mixed with a little bit of crazy, my X-1 can take your RC51..in any venue..............later for now..

Just for the record,

I don't want to seem like a total jerk, But if you try real hard, you can coax the Buells into just about anything.....

And for Peter_T..I've raced against RC51's on the street and know how the riders respond....no, I have never had the pleasure of ridin' one myself, so a comparison is a little unfair, but, I arrived first!

I sincerely hope no offense was taken.

Hi. I just discovered this web site and I have some questions as a new potential Buell owner. I havent ridden for about 8 years and have the itch to start again. I have found a mint condition 96' s-1 Lightning with 5,000 miles on it. It is red w/ the polished PM wheels, aftermarket carbon fiber air cleaner assembly, exhaust and seat. the owner has all the original paperwork, parts and even shop manuals. He wants $ 5300 for it. Is this a good price? I think it is but I wanted some other opinions. Also, what is the difference between the S-1 Lightning and the newer X-1 Lightning? Any quick advice will be very appreciated. He is holding the bike for me until tomorrow. So, I have to decide soon. Please e mail me direct, if possible. Thanks! Oh yeah, cool site, I will definitely be back!

Buy the S1. Great price. If you like Buells then you will want to keep that bike, whether or not you decide to get a newer one.

The S1 will give you similar ride experience to the X1 with 2 major differences:
1. The stock seat sucks, it hurts, it will extract pain. Oh, I see that this has been dealt with, never mind.
2. The fuel range is short. There are alternatives there, but in the interim you will be stopping for gas every 100 miles. This is not a disadvantage, as you will enjoy people approaching you to talk about your bike at every stop.

DO IT NOW!

What is the deal with the fuel range? How many gallons does the tank hold? What kind of mileage? It doesnt matter, just curious. I called the guy and told him that I will pick it up tomorrow.

BPL - The older small tank Buells would usually run about 95-110 miles before hitting reserve. I had a 97 M2 (same tank) that would go that distance and no mas.

The S1 is considered one of the last hand built Buells. It was before BMC hit it big and really started cranking out bikes. The S1 was the sports car of the line while the S2 was the tourer. for this reason, and more, they demand mucho respect in Buell circles.

Buy it. It's that last of the true hooligan's that started this all.

Should be close to 4 gal including reserve if you cram every last drop into the tank; otherwise maybe 3.7 gal to ensure no overflow. You should get well over 100 miles on mild throttle days. My old '97 M2 hardly ever got below 50 mpg.

They said it above. The 4 gallon tank is a bit of a limitation when riding with a group. My S1 has been getting 40-42 mpg which is low. With warmer weather now ariving I am working on jetting that should improve this.

Have BIG fun, you are going to love/hate this bike. The love part will probably overshadow the bad parts.

What do you think will be the hate part of the love/hate relationship will be. Just wondering what I need to look out for. I know the feeling, my other toy is a very fast but very temperamental 88 Mustang GT. I am going to pick the bike up on Sat. morning. His loss, my gain! Thanks for the help guys.

Ever owned a Harley? Me neither. I better not say much more...

My wife is after me to go back to Suzuki. Everything she learned about HD she learned from me, and now I regret saying anything. But so far I have always made it back to the barn under power, so I'll knock on wood. (Sometimes I'm holding the throttle open with one hand and a piece of the bike with another, but hey, it makes for good stories!)
