yesterday pulling up to a stop sign i pulled in my clutch lever and it was still grabbing. made it home and did a clutch adj. according to the service manual (to the "T"), backing off the front adjustment so lever is loose, took off clutch inspection plate & adjusted clutch (i did the adj. according to the service manual & advice from searching here) it still does the same thing: start bike, pull in clutch & when i put it in gear it wants to take off, hard enough to where i can't hold it back. i tried to adj. it several times with the same result. any feedback will help. If it was working normally and "all of a sudden" acted up...check the lip on the primary cover where the clutch mechanism rests...they are prone to crack...if so the clutch will not release. |

The good news is that you have a black cover. Those are relatively easy to get. Metallic Magnesium covers have been on back order for some time. I have a few black covers in stock, but don't have them up on the website yet, so if you want one, call the order in. Al |

Have you checked throw out bearing? |

I have a similar problem on my 2000 X1, ~ 60k miles. The clutch began to not fully disengage, it felt like it was dragging. Couldn't get neutral at all once it was warmed up. A few years ago it behaved similarly just before the cable failed. So, I figured it's got to be the cable, as the one I replaced a few years ago now has ~ 25k miles on it. I put the new cable on last week, adjusted everything per manual specs. 10 miles later, the new cable needs adjustment again - I keep getting more freeplay at the lever. Not a good feeling. Is there anything else besides a cracked cover lip that could be the cause? Also, looking at photos of cover inside, where's this "lip" that's crack prone? (I haven't taken the cover off yet to look for cracks) |

The XL based primary cover doesn't have the same failure as the XB covers. I suppose it could, but I don't hear about it. But when the cover fails, it isn't a gradual keep-getting-more-freeplay failure. It just stops working. More than likely, your throwout bearing is coming apart and getting lots more sideplay than it needs. The good news is that it's cheap and relatively easy to fix. Could be other things, but that's the most likely based on how you described it. Al |
