I think it is my starter, but not sure. when I go to start the bike, I push in the start button and it barely turns over, and takes a while to get it going, or the starter will start clicking and not turn the engine. this has MELTed one battery already and melted my new one half way. I use a YUASA super sealed 12V. Do I need a different battery or a new starter?

Sounds like you have a bad connection or a short in the wiring.

Exposed metal inside a wire that is in (probably intermittent) contact with some other conductive path (maybe another exposed wire, maybe just bare metal on the chassis).

Yeah think its about time to make sure that your regulator is functioning correctly and reducing voltage to a usable amount..If you put a multi meter on the battery while charging and see 16 volts then you know what your problem is.

I had the same issue with my 06 Lightning Long SS I went to the dealer and he advised that if the batteries cold cranking AMPs are low due to worn out battery it will slow crank and cause the overheating and melting. I got a new battery and all seems well one year latter. Hope this helps!!

Thanks but it end up being a bad ground-- I took it to a shop and they drilled a "real" ground into the engine block on the left side near the foot peg.
