Well, i took my 09 xt to have the rear tire replaced after i picked up a nail. Took it to Legend Harley in Wenatchee, WA, an hour and half away from my town. I ordered the tire several days earlier, after getting the runaround about it being covered under my wheel and tire protection plan ($499 by the way). I show up on a patched tire expecting a rear pirelli diablo strada, and the guy whips out a dunlop d616. Surprise! He tried telling me that this was the replacement for the stradas, because they were unavailable. I had no choice but to take the new tire or ride home on my plugged pirelli.

I call BS.

I can do a google search right now and find the pirelli available to order online all over the place. I now have a tire that looks completely out of place on my XT, and doesnt match my other pirelli. Its also a tiny bit taller. The tire is intended for the X, not the XT. It has an aggressive tread pattern intended for potential off road use, which is not what i want to do. I bought a sport tourer, i want my sport touring tire! Shouldnt they have at least gotten me a pirelli angel, since thats what the '10 XT comes with? I have to settle with a Dunflop? really? For God's sakes, thats what hardley's come with! I am seriously disgruntled with HD at the moment, ive had almost nothing but trouble with them since i bought my bike. I'm starting to think they either just ordered the cheaper tire to cut costs, or they screwed up and thought they were replacing a tire for an XB12X instead of an XT, and then lied about it. I think the latter is most likely.
So, im left to ask: exactly what tire WAS i supposed to get, if not a Strada? What is the replacement for the XT? it simply can't be the D616. anyone PLEASE help me on this one. I have a weeklong ride coming in about 9 days, and i want the right tire. Any info or experience dealing with the HD shop replacing these tires or the dunlop d616's is greatly appreciated. thanks

Here's the "Party Line":

D616 H.P. Sport Radial
* The D616 is a radical new sport radial for the mean streets, with the looks and performance to run anywhere.
* Innovative and aggressive tread pattern derived from wet-track road-racing tread design.
* Cool-running tread with superior grip characteristics also provides excellent cut and wear resistance.
* Front tire incorporates Dunlop's aramid breaker tread reinforcement and radial casing technology to provide excellent steering response and cornering stability.
* Rear tire combines Jointless Band (JLB) construction with Dunlop CTCS (Carcass Tension Control System) for enhanced cornering and wear performance, excellent high-speed stability and exceptional tire compliance.

I'm always leary of MisMatched tires, especially if any "Spirited Riding" is involved...

Did they replace it under the warranty? Might call the warranty company. The Angle and Diablo (T?) are both active part numbers at HD.

yes, they replaced it under my wheel and tire protection plan. they are now telling me that since the diablo strada is out of production, the OEM replacement is the Dunlop D616, which isn't even a sport touring tire. What i WANT from harley (which i probably wont get) even whole set of Angel ST's since they come stock on the '10 XT. So far Harley is telling me they might be able to discount new tires and installation, but thats it. I still Call BS. When an OEM part fails, and the part is unavailable, they should find the closest thing to it, no matter what. Instead of admitting they have compromised the handling, looks, and safety of my bike, they they say they're "following the guidelines of the warranty". Sick of it.

i would say if they cant mach what you have they should give you a matching set. I'm not into mixing tires. I just replaced my strada, from bike bandit . after this rear is done i will swich to the replacement, wich i thought was the angel. Sounds like they need to make a customer happy.

Personally, I would just ride it, its not a bad tire, and then drive around a construction zone when the tire is halfway done till you *mysteriously* gain more metal in the tire.

Yes the Angel ST is the replacement for the Diablo Strada.

Talked to Zurich, the company that the warranty is through. I was told that the dealer had the responsibility of choosing a suitable replacement, not only what tire, but also from where to get it. Wenatchee HD straight up lied to me. I was told that he HAD to get a dunlop because thats what HD specified as the replacement. total crap. Also, Zurich said HD should have asked ME what tire i wanted as a replacement. I called Latus HD, a big dealer with a good rep in the Portland area, and presented the same scenario to them that i presented to Legend in Wenatchee. They called me within an hour and not only did they have 7(!) diablo stradas my size in stock, but they had no confusion with the tire and wheel coverage plan that Legend initially didn't even know existed. I was also told that in the event an OEM tire is unavailable the dealership must get authorization from the owner of the bike to use a different tire. Zurich also told me Legend got a check from Zurich for a $207 dollar tire plus the $80 mounting and balancing (1 hour shop time). I cant find a dunlop d616 my size for more than $175. Cheapest is around $130. Way to profit off a warranty!
So here's where I'm at.. talked to Mike in Service today at legend and I'm supposed to give him a contact phone number and part number so he can see if Mark, the Dealer Manager will put my tire and install on the company card. I see it this way: they can either give me my tire for free and take this god forsaken dunlop off my buell and keep me coming back for service and warranty work, or they can tell me shove it and i'll do 5 things:

1. Chew them out

2. Contact HD corporate and file a complaint

3. Write a letter to MCN, the motorcycle magazine i subscribe to.

4. Forever tell everyone i know who either owns a motorcycle or is considering owning a motorcycle never to shop or receive service at Legend HD in wenatchee because they're incompetent and rude.

5. Ride 5 hours to portland, drive a screw into my tire and take it to Latus HD where i can be confident my service will be prompt, professional, and courteous as i receive a brand new Pirelli Diablo Strada 180/55 ZR-17, compliments of Zurich.

ps... Legend also sent me the wrong $200 part i paid them to ship to me. I carefully described the black plastic rear fender to them, and somehow received the tan painted metal tail light housing. Legend is 0 for 2 so far.

MSRP on a D616 rear is $207. Dealers get them from Harley for a bit less than that, but still not as low as internet prices. Profit will be about the same regardless of the tire, most of it is in the labor.

About the tail section piece, in the diagrams everything is black and white, and the descriptions are often vague. You should of verified on their screen what you wanted, or provided the part number. 4 out of 5 times, when a customer gets a wrong part it is due to a situation like yours where the parts guy is doing his best to figure out what you want but ultimately gets it wrong. Even I am not sure which piece you mean by the black plastic rear fender, as there are several parts that could be it.

Well, when i described the piece over the phone i told them that the turn signals and license plate bracket mount to it. Seems like it should have been pretty easy. Nonetheless, the parts dept. was more helpful than service. The guy is going to send me a catalog so i can find the exact part number and order it. when i order it, he's going to send prepaid postage with it to return the wrong part. Also, as far as the tire goes, the dealer manager is now telling me he's got a diablo corsa for me that he'll mount free of charge. So, i have to decide... do i want to live with my current tire or take a corsa, which will still be mismatched, but at least be a pirelli diablo? let me know what you guys think. And froggy.. if i had to guess, you work at a dealership, don't you?

I would stick with your current tire. The Corsa (not sure which one, there are a few variants) series tires are full on sportbike tires that come stock on the Firebolt and 1125R. They handle great, but don't last long.

That is good that the dealer is working with you on the part and is sending you the book. Take a peak through it, I recommend you pickup a copy as the parts diagrams are invaluable when reassembling your bike. Also, the part you want (which I couldn't figure out in the first post but now know), is M0755.1AK - BRACKET, LICENSE PLATE - Retail Price:$23.80

Also, I have never been employed nor associated with HD/Buell, any of their dealers, or affiliates in any way, shape, or form. Basically, I am nothing more than just another Buell rider like you. : )

Thanks froggy. The corsa they at first said they had was a corsa III, which is a dual compound. I talked to a parts guy, he said the tire was a corsa III. Then i talked to the general manager not 2 minutes later, and he said he didnt have a corsa and now hes offering me a michelin pilot road 2. These guys just dont seem to know what they have or what to do. ill probably end up just running through the dunlop ive got, but any thoughts on the michelin would be useful. i'm still PO'd that they didnt tell me they ordered a different tire, and the service dept really has been a pain to work with. they seem to have this holier-than-thou "we're right, you're wrong" attitude and won't admit any mistakes. The fast talking general manager has also been a pain, always brushing me off, telling me to call back in a few days. I'm basically done dealing with them for good and i plan to put in a complaint to harley corporate about their service dept. (parts at least made an honest effort). I bet soon after I'll get a call from the dealer saying, "Hey, we ordered in a Diablo Strada from another dealership and we'll let you know when it comes in!" It is worth noting also that I am not the only one with a horror story from this dealership. After this whole fiasco i have talked to several locals and heard mostly bad things about them.
Also, i appreciate the effort, but that still doesnt seem like the right part.. now i see what you mean when it comes to identifying parts. I think the bracket you found is the little piece on the back of the fender i need that holds on the plate. What i actually need functions as the mudguard/tail fender, and at the top of it, just under the LED taillight is the tumbler for removing the seat. Its probably the most obvious black plastic piece on the back of the bike, but like you said there are a lot of pieces it could be and without actually looking at it is pretty hard to identify. But this may all be for nothing anyway, because im considering a DIY fender elimination project over the winter, since the only one i can find for the uly eliminates the oh-so-useful triple tail. Thanks again for your help!

The Corsa III, while being a dual compound, is a supersport tire. I run them on my 1125's. Fantastic tire for the twisties and track days, terrible tire for commuting, slab, rain, off road, cold, etc.

I am surprised they have that, if it is true and indeed in the right size, go for it. Fantastic tire, popular with many Uly riders.

Common place in just about any vehicle repair shop. I don't know why, I guess they are just insecure or something.

This?

Here is the under side with the part number.

Oh, thats interesting, because mine isn't on the bike because of this:

It is the Tidy Tail from Palmer Products. http://palmerproducts.auto.officelive.com/buellxb12x.aspx

You can also make one yourself if you are handy and can cut/bend a piece of aluminum. There is an old thread about it I can dig up for you.

Yes, froggy, thats the part! I cant believe i was dumb enough not to find that part number on the part. duh. Also, I just recently found that tail tidy from a banner ad on badweb for palmer parts. It looks good, but what happened to yours? Did it fall over on it or did it somehow break from defect?

Also, even though the tire hes offering is a good tire, it still won't match my front. I talked to a harley customer service guy today. He'll probably give me a call back, i dont know. Basically, i left a complaint and he's supposed to call and talk to the dealer. I still dont see why Legend can't get a tire shipped from Latus, barely a state away, after Latus said it wouldn't be a problem at all for them to send Legend a tire.

Also, i don't really have the kind of tools or know how to bend a piece of aluminum properly. the approach i was going to take to do it wouldn't have involved much fabrication.

thanks again!

My turn signal is broken, not the tidy tail. Hit a car, long story : )

I wouldn't worry about the front tire if you are happy with the current Strada. The front has more of an impact on how the bike handles than the rear, and as long as you aren't running a super sticky rear with a not sticky front you will be fine. If you want to hear about missmatch, I am running a Diablo Strada on the rear and a Michelin not street legal race tire on the front. Handles great, scares the shit out of me in the rain! : D
