I am starting a top end freshening this morning.I'm getting a pair of 20,000 mile heads to replace the 97,000 milers.I'll replace the pushrods and lifters, new gaskets. Hone the cylinders and replace the rings. I'm staying stock because like Tramp I like the unstressed longevity of the '96/'96 Sportster motor.I also have a very small budget, having been out of work for quite a while. I am looking for suggestions as to anything else I should do,bearing in mind we're talking Stock, not hot rodded. Suggestions on gaskets, budget lifters, pushrods and where to purchase them. I'm also planning on pulling the cam cover to modify and re polish,so any suggestion as to how to not frak that up. |

Should be pretty straight forward. The new HD gasket sets are pretty good, I've had no problems with the new base or head gaskets. The base is the new style metal vs the old paper. Why are you replacing the push rods? I would think they should be fine. But??? Lifters is a good idea. From everything I've heard, the stockers are pretty good for the money. Aftermarket units are quite a bit more. For a stock XL motor, I'm not sure it's worth it Have fun getting the old gasket off the base of they cylinders. No fun.. LOTS of razor blades... With that many miles on the motor, you may want to have the cylinders checked for roundness. A .010" over set of pistons and a bore job may be in order. Brad |

Brad,I'll only replace the pushrods if they need it.It has been making a tapping noise for quite a while, and got louder recently. The noise appears to be in the top end.The motor mounts are ok as is the primary. |

Michael, You should repost this stuff in the Old School section. Lots of "old schoolers" don't go elswhere very much.. Lots of good help/advice available. Re the big end bearings, the good news is that the crank is rebuildable on the old ones. Give Pam a call at CycleRama, she'll help you out. |
