Well, the trick for removing only one rocker box (the front easy to get at one) and putting the rear cylinder at TDC worked really well for disassembly. So I carefully put the front cylinder at TDC, removed the front rocker box, then put the rear cylinder at TDC, and the cam cover slid of easy as cake. I used a long bamboo kaboob stick (darn handy things for cleaning carbs, removing gasket goo, and applying epoxy) to find TDC. But you have to be careful as it wants to get stuck in there. When I pulled the cam cover, the cams came right out with it with no resistance whatsoever. Perfect! Now that I had the cams out over night and went to put them back in, I'm guessing I missed the bit about "don't let the rear cylinder cams come out of the motor side, and if you do, put them back in quick before the lifters fill up". DOH! So anyway, if there is a trick to getting those lifters up enough to get those cams back in without pulling that rear rocker box, I am all ears. In the meantime, if anyone else is trying this trick, don't let the rear cams come out with the cam cover when you pull it. While we are on the topic in the knowledge vault, when you use this trick, can you still set the cam timing easily? In other words, are all the cam marks set up to be aligned at rear cylinder TDC? Or is figuring out the timing another headache you have to work through to use this trick? No big deal, the engine is already rotated so I'm only 10 minutes from having the rear rocker box off also, and I don't being able to check the rockers and pushrods while I have it this far apart. |

DOH!!! When you do the one cylinder rocker box trick, you can't let the cams come out when the cover comes off. If they do, you need to remove the other rocker box to do the cam timing. Al |

Thanks Al! It's amazing how quickly it came to me... almost the instant I realized the cam would not slip back in, it was obvious that I should not have let the cams come out. Someday it will occur to me before it's too late... |
