(For the record, this thread is only in reference to the new metal style XB gaskets, not the old tube frame gaskets. The tube frame paper gaskets were bad enough new, much less when reusing them...) I'm replacing my oil pump and oil pump drive gear on my 05 XB9SX. The gear looked ugly from through the inspection hole, but now that I have it apart, it doesn't actually look that bad. Worn for sure, but nowhere near failure, and this is with 30k miles on the odometer. Oh well, it'll be bulletproof now, and I scavenged all the necessary parts cheap from eBay and classifieds over the last year. I was planning on all new gaskets for the front rocker box, cam cover, and oil pump. But so help me, as I look at the ones that came off (the new metal style), they look absolutely pristine. And I am *really* tempted to just slap a very thin coat of permatex gray (anerobic flexible sealant) on them and reassemble, saving $50 or $75 or whatever the gaskets will cost. This is the part where you all are supposed to talk me out of that idea... but rotating the engine to get to the rocker box just isn't that much work. Less then 1 hour easy. And those gaskets just look to be in SUCH good shape. They went 30k with no obvious wear or degredation... so with some hylomar will they go another 30k? I guess what I am looking for is some real world negative feedback... somebody saying "I did the same thing and it failed 10k miles later". I already have positive feedback from Pammy (who said she wouldn't do it on a customers bike, but would probably risk it on her own bike if she was the one that had to fix it if it leaked... which is where I am at). A google search here and elsewhere is the same thing... people (rightly) saying "don't risk it" but without real world negative outcomes, and lots of other people saying "been there, done that, no problems". So I'm looking for "been there, done that, had to redo it" experiences. Otherwise, I'll take that money I would have spent on gaskets and get a nice new 6mm rotor for the Uly, I'd much rather send Erik the money and get something I know I really do need... |

exercise poor judgment, save a LITTLE money, then change your username to reepiCHEAP... since you have doubts, go with common sense, remove a possibility of failure, replace the gaskets, preserve your username |

Bill, Are the XB gaskets a gasket type material with a metal core? If so, they are like the new style tuber cover gaskets. That said, I've reused the primary a number of times with no problems. Most I've gone is about 10,000 miles so I don't have any data past that. All I've notices is a slight "weep" if you can even call it that. If you don't wash the bike for a long time, you can see a SLIGHT discoloration of the dirt along the gasket joint. If you wash the bike like you are suppose to, you would never even notice it. I'm not talking about drips or anything like that, just a very slight wicking type thing. Again you only notice it after a long spell of non washing. I don't have any info on the cam cover side but I would expect the same results. What the hell, go for it and let the rest of us cheap bastards know how it works for you... Brad |
