So I just picked up an XB9R firebolt in october and I am doing a once over before taking it out for its first ride of the season. When inspecting the primary oil level (transmission oil), I placed the bike on a stand so it was vertical, and then removed the clutch inspection cover. The oil was just changed by the previous owner, but I can't tell if it needs a top up or not.

The diagram in both the service manual and owner's manual is very ambiguous. It has a dotted line, but the picture seems to have been taken on an angle, so I have no idea where that line is??? In the directions, it says to fill up to the diaphragm spring, which doesn't help, since I don't know what that is???

Could someone please instruct me as to where the oil level should be filled to? A better picture would be amazing!

Thanks.

yup, with the bike on the stand look at the bottom of the opening. the fluid should be just at the very edge of that external opening without running out. replace the gasket and button up! save u 100 bucks from the dealer

Thanks for the reply Mcerda. I posted this question in another section and got a bit of a different response: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/384 2/551577.html?1270081483

Here is the picture that shows the level, and for me, filling it up to the bottom of the plate that you remove would be a lot higher than the wavy disc thing in this picture.

So I am really not sure if it makes a huge difference either way you do it, but the diagram in my owner's manual (different than the one above) is very misleading.

it makes a difference. proper level results in oil running out if the bike is on the stand and the derby cover is removed. proper level IS NOT ACHIEVED with bike on side stand. upright, fluid level just touching bottom of clutch, as shown in fsm

Ok, so just so I am clear here:

1 - put bike on rear stand (not side stand)
2 - fill to level indicated in picture (just touching bottom of clutch)

3 - Install cover back on.
*If you were to open the cover while bike is on side stand, rather than rear stand, oil would leak out.

Is that correct?

Do not put bike on rear stand. Just hold it upright on level surface. If you put it on a rear stand you'll tend to over-fill it as more oil migrates forward in the chaincase.
