Hi All, just picked up my "new" Jun 2008 build 1125r from Riders in Bridgwater. I have a few issues. They had tested it etc and then when I picked it up, it started and ran for a few secs on tickover then stopped. It would not re-start and the battery went flat. They fitted a new battery and no joy. They robbed and ECU from another oct 08 build, flashed the latest software "allegedly" and it ran. Meantime they had damaged thereads on the seat screws and lost a nylon washer from the airbox cover. " hours later I took it 32 miles home. What a fun bike. Today I wheel it out of the shed, briefly fired it up and took it to my workshop shed 30 yds away and stopped it to fit the trickle charger socket and learn a bit about suspension settings and just check it all over for loose bits etc, same as we all do with a new toy. I propped it upright on a swingarm stand and pulled the dipstick. NO OIL !! wiped it dry and double checked it. NO OIL ! It is now 3 hours since it was started and the dipstick is dry. I have lifted the front wheel onto a block so it is the same height as the rear and there is still no oil on the stick and no leaks on the floor. I know the oil check is a bit fiddly but can anyone please enlighten me ?

Make sure you are checking the oil correctly, I recommend the hot check:

quote:

Oil Level Cold Check

Perform engine oil level COLD CHECK as follows:
NOTE:

For an accurate cold check, you must wait a minimum of four hours after the motorcycle has been run.

See Filler Plug/Dipstick Location. Loosen the dipstick.

Hold the motorcycle upright for one minute.

While continuing to hold the motorcycle upright, remove and wipe off the dipstick.

Insert dipstick into oil filler hole, screwing dipstick in completely.

See Filler Plug/Dipstick Location. Unscrew and remove dipstick and note oil level. An indicated oil level between MIN and MAX is acceptable for safe engine operation. Oil should be added in 3.4 fl. oz. 0.1 L increments, depending on how far the level is from the MAX reading. If oil was added, proceed to the Oil Level Hot Check procedure.

Oil Level Hot Check

Perform engine oil level HOT CHECK as follows:

Ride motorcycle for approximately 10 minutes. Ride at least 5 miles 8 kilometers to verify the oil is hot and the engine is at normal operating temperature. Readings taken with colder oil could lead to an overfull engine condition.

Stand the motorcycle upright (not leaning on sidestand) on a firm level surface. An uneven surface will produce a false oil reading.

Idle the motorcycle for three minutes. Shut off the motorcycle.

See Filler Plug/Dipstick Location. Loosen the dipstick.

Wait for 3-4 minutes after shutdown (with vehicle still upright) before reading the oil level, or false readings may result.

Unscrew and remove dipstick from oil filler hole. Wipe dipstick clean.

Insert dipstick into oil filler hole, screwing dipstick in completely.

See Oil Dipstick Proper Operating Range. Unscrew and remove dipstick and note oil level. An indicated oil level between MIN and MAX (measured after performing steps 1 through 7) is acceptable for safe engine operation. Oil should be added in 3.4 fl. oz. 0.1 L increments, depending on how far the level is from the MAX reading. Confirm oil level by repeating steps 1 through 8.
NOTE:

If the oil level is at (or above) the OVERFULL mark, drain oil at 6.8 fl. oz. 0.2 L increments until the oil level is between the MIN and MAX marks on the dipstick. Repeat steps 1 though 8 to confirm proper level.

Hand tighten dipstick into oil filler hole.

Thanks Froggy for the reply, I tried all that and am up to speed with the procedure. On cold I finally found oil 7mm below the dipstick with a piece of wire. That may not be right though because the dipstick tube turns 90 degrees into the engine case there and the wire may have picked up a residual drop of oil form the corner where it could go no further. At that level I dont want to risk a damaging engine start for a hot reading and I dont have any of the correct oil here yet. When I rode back from the dealers, the fans were cutting in much of the time even at running in RPM (max 6k) and open roads with zero traffic. Is this normal or am I overheating through lack of lube. My SV1000 only ever cut in in heavy traffic. Its not hot here yet. Sorry to be a newb on this but I am worried. I have now asked the dealer to sort it tonight by e-mail so the ball is in their court.

Dealer came out to see the bike today. This is weird, we added about 150ml of oil and the thing is now up to the mark, from being off the bottom of the dipstick by 7mm. We ran the engine till it was hot, weather was too bad to go out riding proper, and the level was near as makes no difference spot on. These are one quirky oddball bike and thats precisely why I bought it. I am happy that there has been no damage done to the engine. Apparently the fans run for much of the time. Now all I need is some sunshine....... Thanks for your input.
