Bought a new Uly in NC, and proceeded to ride it back to Ohio (700+ mile trip). I looked at the back tire before I left and observed that it was shot and would need to be replaced asap, but that it should get me back to Ohio first.

The condition was just a hint of tread left down the middle where it was worn the worst. No threads showing or anything, just no real tread left. I have a picture at home, I'll try and update this thread with it later.

Anyway, it made it about 300 miles before it hit something that took a big snake bite out of it (it happens). No idea what it hit, but when the air was out, you got a sense of just how thin those syncs really are... it was like paper. I wouldn't be surprised if it was just a piece of gravel that popped it.

I love the syncs, am on my 5th rear now between the Uly and the 9sx, and bought another to replace it. So I am not slamming the tire or the brand. Just a warning that "done is done" with these tires... unlike something like a Dunlop D220, that even after the tread is gone, can go another several hundred miles in "baby it" mode before threads show up.

So anyway, replace those syncs before they go bald. The price for such a light and fast to heat up tire is a VERY precise but thinly constructed carcass. There is no margin there....

That reminds me of a trick that Al Lighton used on one ride. And that was to carry "Gaffers" tape which was used on a bike with a worn tire and exposed threads showing by wrapping the tape on the road contact portion of the tire for the purpose of adding a few extra "miles" to an already worn out tire.

Gaffers tape is similar to duct tape but doesn't leave a sticky residue and thus costs more.

Stick the tape on, have your passenger hold the roll and sit backwards on the seat, and you could be applying the tape as fast as you wear it off! : )

On the infamous Gaffers Tape ride from the Breckenridge, Colorado Buell event in 2001, we found one of our riders tire showing a foot of threads in the middle of monument valley, Utah, 150 miles from ANYTHING. We stuck one piece over the threads, then wrapped the tire twice. Figured it would get us 2 miles at a time....well, we'd get about 30 miles on a wrap. Rode 350 miles on gaffers tape, made it all the way to Vegas. Gaffers tape will be with me on ALL big rides.

I actually put about 100+ miles on a Dunlap with threads showing. Not straight; it was around town for about a week. I wouldn't recommend it by any means; just the grace of God that I managed.
