i am confused about oil stuff. what is primary and engine and so on. should i check both before i ride or just engine oil.

Assuming you have an XB, ride the bike just enough to get the engine and oil to full operating temperature. Then, with the bike on the side-stand, check the level on the dipstick. Again, assuming you have an XB, the dipstick is on the left side of the swingarm, toward the front.

You should check the primary level when you do an oil change. If you using Formula+ in the primary, then you can go 10,000 miles between primary oil changes.

To check the primary oil level you must remove the clutch inspection cover. The level is specified in the service manual. The manual has a nice illustration of the proper level, and this illustration explains it a lot better than I can with words.

If you plan on servicing your own bike, then please buy the service manual. It is only $35-$60, depending on where you get it, and it is worth twice the price, regardless of what you end up paying for it.
