ive been shopping around for ideas to modify the airbox cover on my 03 XB9S (the visible one). i'd like to cut some slots in it and possibly back them with wire mesh...use your imaginations. after looking through here, im beginning to wonder if i should cut holes in the inner airbox cover to increase airflow. help please!!! if i do cut the inner lid, should i block off the "snorkel"? if i block off the snorkel, wouldnt i have to open up the outter cover to allow in a sufficient air flow? ive got the race ecm and k&n so anything i can do to increase the airflow would compliment those mods. post some pics!!! thanks |

Ok, ive waded through here for a few days searching for knowledge and this is what ive decided to do to my 03 XB9S. let me know what you pros think: Im gonna start by plugging the intake duct through the frame, not sure how but i will figure it out. im gonna swap the inner cover for the 06 model from American Sport Bike because its already punched out and has the nipple to direct airflow, although i may hack it up a little more. i'll somehow open up the outer cover. i'll start by removing the plastic around the gas cap and replacing it with a wire mesh and possibly cut some other strategically located holes... or i'll just use this cover: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Carbon-Fiber-Gas-Ta nk-Airbox-Cover-Cowl-Buell-XB-Series_W0QQcmdZViewI temQQhashZitem3359048e45QQitemZ220536802885QQptZMo torcyclesQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories im also going to do the breather mod using the kit from American Sport Bike. let me know what you guys think of this potential set up. BWB is always important in the mods ive decided on |

Leave it. Just remove the snorkel.

Get an 07+ model, its more open. Or you could do the open airbox kit from American Sport Bike, since you are doing the breather reroute anyway. That ebay airbox cover is junk, it is very thin. American Sport Bike has a similar one that is much nicer. |

my first desire was to do the open airbox kit from American Sport Bike, but its listed as race use only. now, my bike isnt exactly street legal as is so im not too concerned about that, within reason. but i thought i'd maybe have to provide some sort of documentation to get away with that kit...same as the carbon airbox cover from American Sport Bike. but if i can get it for street use then im down for that. if i do that open airbox kit, i'd like to get a Kick Ash cover to show it off. Thanx for tuning in bra. |

The race use only thing is to cover Al's ass, because you are modifying EPA controlled devices. You even said you wanted to cut up the airbox. Guess what? That isn't EPA friendly either, same with breather reroute You do not need any kind of race licence to purchase from Al I had the carbon fiber airbox with open airbox kit on my Uly and loved it, now I run the hero blue translucent airbox with the open airbox kit on my current XB

tha carbon cover is what i really want since it already is opened up. but i think a translucent "kick ash" cover is more affordable. dont the newer model covers have an intake area around the gas filler cap? ive shopped around on here but if you've got any recommendations on where i can find one i'd like to hear 'em. thats a nice XB, i really like your front rotor. when i get mine put back together im definatly gonna post some pics so you guys can see what yall helped me build |

Yea the Airbox is the American Sport Bike one, part # 9006CIA. All teh 2006+ XB airbox covers have the mesh opening, and Kick ash was a new color for 06 so all will have the vent. A new cover is a little over $200 but you can still buy them if you don't mind waiting a few weeks for it to be processed. The rotor is the Wave rotor, also from American Sport Bike. I have switched it up quite a bit since then |
