Recently bought this bike, I bought it unseen which was perhaps a bit silly but because it had only done 3000 ks I assumed it would be 'as new'. Anyway ... the problem is that it doesn't automatically spring back into position after changing gears so that it is ready for me to select the next gear, up or down. The problem is the same both ways, I have to first manually move the lever in the opposite direction that I want to go and then it will let me select the next gear, the problem is there most of the time, sometimes it springs properly and lets me select without having to do the little gear shift movement thing first. Anyway ... it sure would be nice to have it working properly, anyone have any suggestions as to what it might be / how easy it would be to fix ? Also ... the bolt that holds the gear shift lever in, is always working itself loose and I have to keep screwing it back in, if I screw it too tight I can't change gear's, any suggestions there ? I find this curious actually from a bike with such low mileage, are these common faults ? Thanks. |

Just a guess, without a parts and service manual in front of me, it seems that bolt has come out before, for whatever reason, and maybe disappeared once. If it did indeed fall out, you may not have the correct bolt, and may be missing one or more spacers or shims. I would start there. And no, not a common problem. I would check for proper parts and correct assembly. |

I suspect the bike was down, and bent that shifter shaft, and perhaps "sprang some springs" on the shifter pawl. All fixable without splitting the cases, but you will have to take apart the primary. |

Ok, thanks for that guys. I suspect you maybe right, the bike was dropped or something like that. They maybe used a different bolt, and I don't know what else. I'm not really sure where to start, I guess I'll get a service manual, would like to try fix it myself, does anyone have the parts they think I might need by chance ? Thanks a lot. |

Just thought to follow up on this, problem solved now, had the biked looked at by a hd/buell mechanic here in Perth, the spring was weak, not enough tension in it, replaced spring with a new one and is fine now, he said someone had already had the primary cover off, my guess is someone had a worn out spring and swapped it for the good one in there. the bolt was not the original/correct bolt either. The bike had only done 3000ks when I bought it. The reason I think someone did that is that it had a faulty exhaust actuator also, I had to get a new one, I think they swapped that part out as well, the battery is sus also. |
