Was coming home from great ride in Central California when I heard what sounded like an innocuous rattle coming from somewhere beneath the faring. I was doing 80 when the bike began to lose power, almost as if I was running out of gas. I immediately headed for an off-ramp and limped into a parking lot. No obvious signs of trouble save a little oil on the right side of the exhaust. I pulled the dipstick & the oil level was fine. I fired it up again and heard a loud, nasty rattle coming from the front cylinder or thereabout.
Got my buddy to trailer it to his garage nearby where we pulled the plugs, both of which looked nice and clean. Problem seems out of my scope so I'm gonna need to take it to the pros, but I'm hoping it isn't as bad as it sounds and was wondering if anyone had any theories. |

Oil pump drive gear? Drop the oil pump and look up in the cam cavity at the pinion gear on the pump. Does it have teeth? Did they come out as little chunks with the oil pump? |

Might be a lifter whose needle bearings self-destructed. That happened with my big twin a couple times and it was instantly a catastrophe both times. Had to completely flush out the motor to insure all the metal particles were gone. |

Thanks for the input. Would oil pump failure cause the noise & the loss of power? And would it be a matter of swapping the pump and flushing the motor? |
