I looking for some ideas for where to look.

'99 X1 stock except for a race ECM, can, and air intake. It has run great for 2+ years, but now, is sluggish, sputters with heavy throttle (not sure if it starts to sputter as it transitions to open loop not. Starts fine cold or hot, and runs fine at lower throttle openings.

I did lose a voltage regulator at about this same time, may or may not be related somehow.

I did a TPS reset, and AFV back to 100%, and no change in running. (error codes zero'd out, and no new ones). AFV back up to where it was before the reset (110.6%)

I was thinking of starting to swap sensors, but with no error codes, and consistent behavior, I thought I'd ask first.

Any ideas where I should look next?

Thanks!

(How'd I do with my first post here?)

Two thoughts:

1. Check your main chassis ground for corrosion/connectivity. While a bad ground often shows numerous trouble codes (which you don't seem to be having)it can/does affect how the engine runs.

2. Get with Al at American Sport Bike and get a new eng temp sensor, and the socket to install it. They are a known maintainance item, and they can fail or go out of calibration without throwing a code, and definitely affect engine performance. DAHIK

Hope this helps, Dave

on '99 you could probably use an open end to replace the sensor.

I've ordered the temp sensor, getting to it doesn't seem to be difficult, so an open ended should work fine.

I cleaned the main ground (the one that comes directly off of the battery). The wiring diagram shows a second ground, which I can't seem to find, I'll keep looking.

I'll run it again with ECMSpy to see if I can see something with the engine temp sensor. The ECMSpy version I have (1.12.1) doesn't show fuel mappings, so I can't see the WOT values (which sure sounds like the end result causing this issue).

Thanks! I'll let you know how I make out.

On my '01 X-1, the other ground is under the left rear corner of the fuel tank, on the frame cross member.

And since you are in the mood, don't forget the end of the battery ground cable where it attaches to the frame.

I’m back. New engine temperature sensor installed, cleaned the grounds (both ends), as well as any other connection I could find, to no avail. All RPMs, as soon as I hit that nearly WOT position, it gets soft.

I did notice on ECMSpy, that the static reading (key on, engine not running), that injector pulsewidth climbed linearly to about 79% throttle (right about where I was encountering the problem), and then dropped off linearly to “0” at 100% throttle. (TPS voltage climbed linearly to 100%). Both front and rear cylinders were exactly the same.

I did notice that the EGO voltage was zero, but the AFV (again) settled in after a TPS and AFV reset.

Since my version of ECMSpy (1.12.1) doesn’t have the fuel maps tab, I can’t display what I’d expect to see would be a corresponding drop off in the maps.

1. Should the pulsewidth continue to rise with rising throttle openings?
2. What would cause the pulsewidth to drop off so linearly?
3. How do I correct this?

Thanks!

You need to enable professional mode to see the maps. It is one of the menus near the top (I can't recall the name off the top of my head)

Thanks Froggy!

Fuel maps look fine to my untrained eye. I'm running out of ideas.

So, I’m getting desperate. Bike runs fine until I get into the upper ends of throttle opening. It did nearly die on me, throwing an O2 sensor error code (which I replaced), but it’s back to running poorly on higher throttle openings (after a TPS reset and AFV = 100%, which is now back up to 104%). I’ve checked and/or cleaned all of the areas suggested (thank you very much).

Can anyone recommend a good mechanic who will work on Buell FI in the Boston area, and/or is anyone near by who has some magic? I’d buy you a really nice steak dinner.

Damn, sooner or later I was sure I’d get it.

Thanks!

Check to make sure your throttle shaft has not snapped. My 99X1 did and would run at lower speeds but wouldn't take any throttle. You are right to check all grounds, also check to make sure your battery is strong and charging properly. My race ecm took a dump when my voltage regulator failed and required replacement.
Keep us informed and good luck.

Found it. The throttle body was not fully seated, must have been an intake air leak which didn't show up at idle. Reseated it, and all is as it should be.

The O2 log did show an abnormal trace, spending most of it's time in the rich range (even with a sensor replace) - Thank you Gunter. As soon as the weather warms up and drys out, I'll take another log to see if this is resolved. (and post a before and after).

Thank you all for your help.
