My 2005 XB12S has a pretty loud rattle/knock that seems to go away under load. It seems to stay when slowly increasing the RPMs in Neutral up to around 3,000rpm. I can't find the noise with a mechanic's stethoscope. All points on the engine come back as a minor whirring noise that sounds similar to a water pump. I've done the basics... I have changed the oil with no substantial particles in the drain oil or particles on the oil drain plug or primary drain plug. I hadn't noted anymore than any previous oil changes. The filter did not have anything in it either. I also checked the primary tension, which didn't seem to be loose. I reset the tension to be safe. I'm tempted to put the primary cover off the motor to see if there is any damage from the primary chain slapping against the housing and how the tensioner shoe is wearing. Still, for the life of me, I can't figure the noise out... |

Sprocket shaft nut may be loose. Poor compression or leak down don't manifest in engine knocking that I've ever heard of. |

"Sprocket shaft nut may be loose. " You should get an increase in vibration at low rpms as well. It will feel like the whole bottom end is loose if it is the sprocket shaft nut. It will seem to be normal at higher rpms like you described. |
