S&S aircleaner w/filter...$150

Airtech makes a nice fiberglass airbox with a forward facing inlet that's pretty affordable, too. I just don't like the idea of sucking in any water.

I have seen homemade "force" systems made out of the stock snorkel with a K&N cone or cylindrical type filters on the end. I've seen a couple online as well as one in an old issue Battle2win. Seems like a cool idea.

Yep, sure does. 2000 M2 airbox fitted on 98 S3T.
But, alas, the 10,000 mile service beckons. Leaking fork seals, blown rear shock, scary steering head bearings, rattling rotor, questionable primary tensioner and god knows what else. At least the airbox looks clean again.

Say...will the stock backing plate and K&N filter from a HD Sportster bolt up to a 2000 S3T? I currently have a Pro Hypercharger installed but plan on replacing it with the Sportster assembly and a couple of Spyke Krank Vents. Think it may work?

Tim:

The backing plate will fit if a spacer of at least 1/2" is used to move the assembly away from the frame. What you may not like is the filter will now occupy space where your knee should be , it's better to make a backing plate , spacer and stand offs , this way the backing plate can be drilled in such a way that it will be positioned at an angle , much like an S2 and can be fit so that it follows thew same angle as your frame rail. This will allow more knee room and looks better too.

Here's a pic of the air cleaners I make , in case you can't picture what I just typed.

aircleaner1

This one is on my S1 , it uses a 3 1/2" K&N filter element and a sportster " ham can " cover , your's will need to have an appropriatly sized hole drilled into it in the correct location for the intake air sensor grommet , the sensor can be installed from the back side. The backing plate is 1/8" aluminum , the spacer between the throttle body and backing plate , again must be at least 1/2" , I usually make them thicker , like 1" , the stand offs are aluminum round stock and are counter sunk on the outboard ends to conform with the dimples in a sportster cover. Of course it helps to have access to a lathe , a bandsaw and a few other pieces of equipment to make it happen , with some skill and some imagination it's not all that difficult to do.

Tim,
Don't bother with the Krank Vents. They are by most accounts of little value.
Check into a set of XB rocker box covers instead.
This lets you get rid of the breather bolts by using PCV valves on the top of the RB covers instead.
Gets rid of all the plumbing on the carb/TB side of the motor.

A set with all the parts (gaskets, grommets, PCV valves etc)will only set you back about $125!

Forcewinder difference between Buell and XL?

What's the difference? I can find the XL (Sportster) Forcewinder kit for about $35 less than the Buell Kit. Any reason the XL kit won't work on an M2?

Hey guys a little help needed. Im getting ready to buy a forcwinder elbow and filter Off a guy for $85 bucks. Not a bad deal as I see it. The question is how should I addjust my carb? Right now I'm running K&N air filter with stock bread box x1 cams I think after the cam change they installed a 48 slow jet with the the air mixtrue screw almost 3 turns out. Another thing I don't know if they guy that I'm purchasing it off of had the gasket that goes between the force and the carb do you know where I pick one up?

Depending on the altitude you live at, a 48 slow and 200 main seems to be the most common re-jet numbers. You can't tell if you need a re-jet without riding it. You can probably re-use your own gasket. All dealers stock it.

Since all of Indiana is below 1000 in elevation, I suspect that both your pilot and main jets may be a little bit big with your K&N/breadbox setup. With the forcewinder, I just don't know. Do the standard sparkplug test after you get it installed and see.

I've got a question for Tube frame owners. It's a bit of a marketing question for American Sport Bike, so if such things turn you off, please scroll down...OTOH, I like to think that this kinda thing is also a service to the Buell tuber community, please forgive the intrusion if you feel otherwise..

You may be aware that Buell has discontinued a bunch of it's old pro series tuber stuff, the CF race air cleaner included. We have a couple here on the shelf, supposedly some of the last new ones left in the country, I hear (Modesto has one too). When they're gone, they're gone for good.

Or are they?

I could re-tool the part, but it's a business decision as to whether to do it or not. I personally think it's one of the best "aftermarket" air cleaners available for the tube bikes, all things considered, and would hate to see it go. I like the looks on Buell bikes, especially bikes that have already received some CF treatment elsewhere.

So I ask you representative tube Buellers:

If you had a stock airbox equipped Buell and went for an upgrade, would you consider that air-cleaner? At $349??

If you have a Buell CF race aircleaner on your bike now, and you dropped it or in some other way damaged the CF cover, would you buy another CF cover for $189 or would you change to one of the other air cleaners?

If I retool it, I may be able to make subtle changes as well. Any issues with the current one that you are aware of? I can think of two changes:
1) The back plate is a little flexy to the front,
2) They could have at least dressed the as-punched edge on the sheet metal, it was a bit "industrial" looking out of the box.

Thanks for any constructive input.
Al at American Sport Bike

Not for me, Al. Believe it or not, I kinda like my breadbox. I'd buy a CF replacement cover for it if anybody made them. Thanks for asking.

Philip,
I scraped the side of mine off the bike on Mt. Evans on the Breckenridge trip a couple years ago..a right side fall on an S3 WILL take the cover out (and the fairing, and the mirrors, and turns signals, and fairing stay, and......: ( )

If there is one nice thing to say about the stock hemholtz, it's that it makes a dandy right side bumper : )

Al,

Since switching to the pro-series part.....I don't think I could go back to something else. A spare would be nice though.

-might be nice to tool it a little thicker to stiffen it up some.
-maybe come up with an insert to fit the offset hole ones.

btw: I am making my wish list for after the tax man cometh

Statistically, I doubt if this means anything, but On my X1 I kept the boxes, gutted the intake and added the K&N filter per the Knowledge Vault.

Al,
I'd sooner buy a Forcewinder, for two reasons....
1) It's a hell of a lot cheaper. There is absolutely no reason for a friggin' air cleaner to cost $349.00!!!!!! There's no reason for one to cost $149.00, for that matter...
2) The Forcewinder looks better. Now that I think about it, though, there's no reason for a K&N on a hunk of sewer pipe to cost hundreds of dollars, either. If you REALLY want to do us a favor, build a generic Forcewinder for less than a hundred bucks. I know the filter costs $40.00 or so.
If you think about it, the most expensive part on an air cleaner is the filter. Why can Moroso sell a high perf. aircleaner for a big block Chevy for fifty bucks (anodized, no less!!!)and we're talking HUNDREDS of dollars for a stinkin' air cleaner? Just a thought.....thanks for listening.

Because they will sell a thousand of em. Al might sell a couple dozen if he's lucky. A shame a new GM crate motor cost less than a new Sportster motor. But it's all in the numbers. More people will buy a V8 than a Vtwin. American Sport Bike is a small business. They are not a manufacture. It's tough bringing parts to market. The cost of manufacturing goes down when you make make a bigger parts run. It's tough. Then you have to make money to stay in business. Good luck Al.

Al,
I had this built for mine, polished aluminum, and is about as simple as you can get for an aircleaner. The only real drawbacks are that you couldnt really use it for a FI bike because of the sensors, and it need to be wrapped with duct tape or some other sort of cover for the rain. Other than that, it looks decent, and is cheap to make, other than the filter (K&N filter for a Sporty Screaming Chicken intake).

I don't know if it's something that people would want, but it's more polished stuff to add to the bike.

Al,
I have the ham can on my M2. I like it. I would definitely try to replace it if it were damaged.

Only complaint is the thickness at the center by the two screw holes. It's a bit thin.
One change suggestion, place the intake hole as far back as possible for maxmum knee room.
I don't have a clearance problem but many do.

My S2 has the "green" CF cover. the two are different. The hole spacing is different so they are not interchangable.
My current cover is slightly cracked around the screw holes.
I would like to replace the cover if a decently priced one were available.

As an alternative a lowcost glass version would be nice if a guy want to some some neat paint work.

Now that you have a larger "market" is there any chance of more of your killer exhaust hangers?

BTW, Again congrats on the "new" business! Good luck!

Brad

Thanks, KC.
I do understand the particulars of supply & demand and all and I have no problem giving my hard-earned dollars to guys like Al, Jim Banke and such, just kind of hard when I'm still making payments on the bike and putting up with bulls**t like Progressive doubling my insurance rates because they (Duh!) just figured out Buell is a sport bike (And me consequentially dumping them for a new ins. co). I've got this arm-long list of "Things To Do To The Buell" which at present rate will probably get finished about the time the motor's ready for a top end. Just wishful thinking, I guess. It's not up to guys like Al, anyway, really. It's up to the entrepreneurs on the 'Web (who have done some pretty amazing stuff, from what I've seen, BTW) to do it easier, quicker, cheaper and sell 'em to Al. Or up to guys like myself to build our own parts, maybe...
(Or maybe just shut up and deal with it)

KCBill,
Bingo. If I knew I could buy 500 of 'em and sell them without tying up that cash in inventory for longer than 6 months, I could get the parts a lot cheaper. But we aren't talking numbers like that, and CF tooling for the good stuff isn't cheap. In a perfect world, I'd buy out Buells tooling rights but I've been told I'd not very likely be able to acquire those rights. Shame, really, that those tools will likely gather dust somewhere rather than equip your rides for a reasonable price, but such is corporate America, I guess. I haven't tried, though. Maybe it could happen....

Brad,
You read my mind on the hangers..I'm thinking I'll get a set of front and rear hangers available. The front hanger is especially critical, since no one makes the front race header bracket any more and they are prone to cracking. I have an idea for one that will be cheaper than my previous design and should work better. It's on the CAD tube now.
